Bride Rovers Notes (24th Apr)

  • Apr 24,2025
BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTE.
ACTION ON ALL FRONTS.
It might be only April but between Club and Inter County games it’s non stop action every evening with multiple games at weekends. Cork came away from Ennis last Sunday -glad of the draw after looking to be well in control. It must have been the Easter water or something like it that resulted in two drawn Munster Championship ties. After the mauling they got in the recent league Final against Cork few gave Tipp a snowball’s chance in hell against Limerick last Sunday. There’s a woeful difference between league and Championship hurling and the two matches last Sunday proved this. Next weekend Tipp come back to the Park  cock a hoop after the Thurles result.  On Friday night Denis Fitzgerald and his Cork Minor Hurling colleagues take on unbeaten Waterford in the Munster Championship in Pairc Ui Rinn. We drew with Newcestown n the SHL on Holy Thursday before a fine home crowd. Saturday sees the 2005 game in the Tony Walsh Cup Tournament with the holders coming to Pairc na Bride. The Lotto Jackpot last Tuesday was a massive €12,000.

COUNTY SHL. Bride Rovers and Newcestown draw 18 points apiece.
Bride Rovers and Newcestown could not be separated in the fourth game of the league campaign. The game was played at home last Thursday night before a good crowd A strong performance from Jason Pratt in goals helped the Rovers keep a clean sheet in the game. Newcestown’s accuracy from frees helped them keep in touch with the Rovers throughout the game. A converted 65 in the last puck of the game secured the draw for Newcestown. The result sees the Rovers sit third in the table.
Team: J. Pratt, O. Roche, J. Peters, K. Cotter, C. Hazelwood, O. Kielty, S. O’Connor, J. Mannix, C. Tobin, A. Walsh, C. Barry, L. Roche, C. Ryan, P. O’Flynn, D. Barry. Substitutions: E. Cashman for C. Barry.
REBEL OG MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE. Another good Minor Football win against St Vincent on a damp and foggy Good Friday Evening in the Northside of the city. With 8 Minor players injured and away on holidays for the long weekend we were short resources to make a team. Great credit and much appreciation to the Under 16 Management for providing us with 5 players. We won the toss and played with the gentle breeze and started well, playing good ball through hand passing & kicking early ball into the inside forwards and kicked good points to give us a 4 point lead before the opposition responded with a few frees. Our Backs were defending well too and transferred good fast ball up the field and our midfielders and forwards scored another 2-2. Vincent’s got a couple of runs on us before half time scoring a penalty and another few points from play and frees left the score 2-6 to 1-4 at the short whistle.
We were playing better football as a team and got some great team scores from play and our continued attaching delivered a lot of scoring frees too. All the while our opponents were picking of a few scores, both sides scored 2 more goals each from play, as the very heavy fog came over the game we got tired and eased off a little towards the end but held out for a good 3rd round win on a score line
Bride Rovers 4-12 to 3-11
Well done to the lads and thanks to the U16 players that really played well and helped with the result.

There was dust rising as they demonstrated their new skills in the April sunshine. Well done to all, and especially their parents and grandparents who continue to encourage and support their involvement. A big thank you to the new mentors who have come on board with this group. We encourage any boys and girls not yet involved and who were born in 2019 and early 2020 to contact the lead mentors. REBEL OG UNDER 14 FOOTBALL. Bride Rovers 5 13 Cobh 2 3. Venue: Pynes, date Monday April 14th
Weather: It was a warm bright evening, ideal for football or any sport. Bride Rovers came out of the blocks with Killian Murphy winning the throw in and going straight on the attack. The first score came inside two minutes with a point from Liam Carr who went on to score two more points in the 1st half. That immediately set the tone for the match as Rovers dominated all over the pitch. The support running when going forward was only matched by the effort to win back the ball on the occasions that it was turned over. At the end of the first half Bride Rovers were 2-6 to 1-2 up with additional scores from James O'Regan (Goal), Padraig Barry (Point) and Henry Bagnel (a Goal and a Point).
The second half continued as the first half had ended but this time Bride Rovers struck early with a Goal from Jack O'Dowd. Further scores in the second-half from Thomas Hegarty, Liam Carr, David Aherne, Padraig Barry, Cathal Quinlan, Sean Healy and Ollie Scanlon underlined the teams overall dominance. It has to be said though that the attacking base was built from a very solid back-line and good goal-keeping from Conor Collins, who did a great job in finding his players from out kick-outs which launched the attacks, with running support coming from the half-backs throughout the game.

EAST CORK JHL DIVISION 4. Our Junior C hurlers played their third league match of the campaign on Monday evening when we travelled to Clonmult Park to take on Midleton. Thia was a very entertaining and  high scoring game and we had a great spread of scorers over the 60 minutes. First half goals from Cameron, Eldon and Cillian and four points from Frank saw us leading well at half time on a score of 3-11 to 8 points.
This is Midleton 5th team and credit to them they never gave up and the second half was a more even affair. Liam and Frank added two more goals to maintain our lead and saw us running out winners on a final score line of 5-18 to 3-13.
We have two more games remaining in the Division 4 league against Dungourney and Erins Own and dates and time still to be confirmed for both.
Final Score 5-18 to 3-13 win

STAMPS. Do you have old postage stamps torn off letters at home in a drawer or press or in a box somewhere? If you have no use for them the Dominican Missions in Pope’s Quay in Cork would be glad of them. Ring John at 087 9538077 to arrange collection.
CORK v KERRY.  What a performance from the cork footballers last Saturday night. After failing to get League Promotion again this year many thought Kerry would be far too strong for the Rebels on Leeside on Holy Saturday night but the game turned out to be an absolute cracker. It went to extra time where Cork lost by just two points. Kerry meet Clare in the Munster Final while John Clery’s men wait for the Qualifiers with a real pep in their step.
CORK v CLARE.  It was Charles Dickens who wrote  ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ which began ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…’ a bit like that in Ennis on Sunday last- truly a game of two halves. Enjoying a twelve point lead -one white flag coming from Brian Roche, an easy Cork victory looked possible. Then came the Clare ‘revival’ in the second half and ‘very lucky to get the draw’ was the emotion at the end of a pulsating game. Limerick and Tipp also drew so next Sunday’s visit of the Premier County to the Park (at 4pm) should be interesting. Everyone correctly says this Munster Championship is mighty but I still think the timing is all wrong.  We’re still in April but theoretically  if Cork or Tipperary lose next Sunday it could well spell the end of their 2025 campaign .  Ok both Cork and Tipp have two more games to come but if a County ends up with just a win and a draw for example it’s curtains.  Does anyone remember when the Munster Championship started in May and we had the All Ireland Final in September?
TONY WALSH CUP. Last year the Hurling Club of JP McManus, South Liberties,  came to Rathcormac and took the Tony Walsh Cup back to Limerick after a 3 17 to 0 19 victory. We take them on again on Saturday next at 3 o clock n the 2025 Final. The Cup commemorates one of our greatest ever Clubmen. As a player, officer, selector, supporter and  guiding light Tony served the Bride Roves Club all his life and his memory will not be forgotten.
SHOOT OUT AT THE OK CORRALL.
On this Friday night the Minor Hurlers of Cork and Waterford meet in Pairc Ui Rinn at 7pm in a Top of The Table Championship clash. Cork have beaten Limerick and Clare while the Decies have had good wins over  both Tipp and Limerick. A win for either team in the Pairc Ui Rinn game would ensure a Munster Final place. A loss means the last Group games -Cork v Tipp and Waterford  v Clare on May 2nd will be crucial. Best of luck to Denis Fitzgerald and his Cork team-mates. It’s a 7 pm throw on Friday.
UNDER12 BOYS WIN.  Our under twelves were away to Lisgoold last week.
Unbeaten in the hurling league, our Under 12’s got their football season started with a fine win over Lisgoold on a scoreline of 4:2 to 1:5. Playing with the wind in the first half, we went in winning 1:1 to no score in a very tight evenly contested match – our point coming from Theo and Jack scored a great goal. Space opened more in the second half and further scores from Cian and Tiarnan, combined with some resolute defending and fine saves from Joey in goal helped us to a 6 point victory. Panel on the day were: Joey Allen, Luke Buckley, Darragh Feeney, Eoin Burke, Oisin Barry Sheehan, Harry Fitzpatrick, Elliot Fitzgerald, Kayden Freeman, Tiarnan Lyons, Jack Gubbins, Killian Donegan, Theo Skillington, Daniel Fitzgerald, Cian Barry, Fionn Purcell, John Keating and Jamie Kearney.
