- Apr 07,2025
Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 7.4.25.
Congratulations to Niall O’Leary and the Rebels on a League Final win last Sunday.
One hundred years ago the first Leagues were played, and it was the brainchild of the Iar-Uachtarán CLG and Cork man Séan McCarthy and supported by Limerick. Cork won it that year with Clare winning Division two. I have no doubt the games drew a big crowd. On Sunday last in Cork there was a massive crowd of 42,245 in the Páirc for this year’s Allianz finals. The weather was excellent with the pitch in fabulous condition and ideal for hurling. The place was a sea of red and white with some from Tipperary and less from Offaly and Waterford. The Waterford and Offaly game was a good standard but the men from the Déise romped home with a relatively facile victory.
There was an expectation that Tipperary would give Cork a right good game. A half an hour before it there was still a huge crowd to come into the Stadium as the patrons were uptown seeking refreshments and enjoying the banter. The game commenced with massive excitement and was close for a while but then the Rebels turned on the burners and banged in three goals in the second quarter to leave it game, set and match at half time. They were under no pressure in the second half and eased on to a ten-point victory although Tipperary did manage twenty-three points. Congratulation to the team, panel, management and especially to our own man Niall O’Leary as he turned in with an outstanding display at corner back and gains his first national medal.
Red FM Division 3 Hurling League.
Castlelyons 0-10 Blackrock 0-15.
We played Blackrock in Castlelyons last Tuesday evening at home in Castlelyons. This is Blackrock’s second team and like us they had suffered two defeats already in the League. The game was lively and fairly tough, and the score was three points apiece after 15 minutes with our stores coming from Alan Fenton 0-2 and Eoin Maye 0-1. Barry Murphy had to go off with an injury and Blackrock piled on the pressure but our full back line of Robbie Feeney, Darragh Spillane and Matthew Rosner defended very well, and Eoin Barry was outstanding in goals. However, it was 0-5 to 0-8 in favour of Blackrock at half time with most of their scores coming from Ciarán Cormack.
Colm Spillane and Alan Fenton went off in the second half as it was their first game back after injury and were replaced by Steven Riffey and Oisin Morrison. We did come within two points of them with a god score from Colm McCarthy and played well but they took their chances well in the last quarter as most of their scores were from play in the second half. Davy Morrison and Eoin Maye and Brian O’Donovan did manage three points from play for us but in the end the Rockies ran out winners by five points. Oscar Hallihan who was playing very well for us received a very nasty hand injury in the second half with required hospital treatment and he will be out for ten weeks. We wish Oscar a safe recovery and let’s hope he is back for the championship. Aidan Hyland refereed this game, and he was alert, decisive and did a good job.

Castlelyons 3-15 Killeagh 0-11
We played Killeagh at under lights in Castlelyons this Monday evening. We started well with Jack Cremin giving an assist t Olan Linehan in the first minute who obliged with a good goal and Jack Kenny scored a second goal a few minutes after with a good ground strike after a melee in the goal area. It was 3-4 to 0-4 after fifteen minutes as Adam Lardner gave a great pass to set Brian Spillane free and he banged it to the net. Our backs defended very well, and Brian O’Donovan was outstanding on the free and busy about the field as welled 3-8 to 0-8 as half time.
In the second half Killeagh started putting on the pressure and scored four unanswered points. But we pulled away again with ‘Dunny’ Robbie, Mike Griffin and Jack Kenny all doing well and getting scores. Management gave a lot of subs game time in the second half. This win makes it three wins from three and we head the league. Well done to the panel and management. Referee Shane Hodgins was alert and did a good job on the whistle.

Rebel Óg Under 12 Hurling Group 4 Grading League.
Castlelyons 6-7 Fr O’Neill’s 3-7.
Our Under 12 team travelled to Fr O’Neill’s to play their first hurling game in the Grading League. They came away with a good win in in what was a very even game with some good hurling. We played against the wind in the first half and led 2-5 to 2-2 at half time.
In the second half the boys worked very hard against the wind with the backs and midfielders clearing a pile of ball. much harder, with the backs and Midfielders clearing a lot of ball. Robbie Milward made some great saves in goal. Fr O’Neills brought us back to one point with a few minutes left but a few late goals gave us the win. The referee on the evening was Eoin Coleman, Youghal. Well done lads. Castlelyons Abú.

Rebel Óg East Under 16 Division One Hurling League.
Castlelyons 3-17 Ballycastle Gaels 3-21
Our Under 16 hurlers travelled to Ballyhooly for this Division 2 league game with Ballycastle Gaels. The evening was fine and bright with the pitch in immaculate condition as it is just opened after complete renovation with a set of lights. Congratulations to the Ballyhooly Club on their continuing and most recent development as there are now two pitches, a walkway, Gym, dressing rooms and a host of other amenities. Back to the game and it was a highly competitive affair all through. Ronan Ryan with 2-0, Khaled Abdelrazik 1-2 and Adam Lardner dept the scoreboard moving but despite some very good defending by our backs including Tom O’Neill and Dylan Leetch our opponents were very sharp all through. We did concede a lot of frees and were punished all the time by their free taker Senan Aherne. They had a very strong diamond in their centre back, two midfielders and centre forward that included Senan Aherne and Darragh Twomey whose dad, Kevin, played football with Castlelyons. But we were in the game right to the end and the lads did make a great effort and, in the end, fell short by four points.
Panel: Jude Hallihan, Darragh Bransfield, Tom O’Neill, Cathal Sheehan, John O’Neill, Dylan Leetch, Oran Hickey, Gearoid McCarthy, Sean Óg McGuire, Darragh Fleming, Sean O’Callaghan, Adam Lardner, Kevin Barry, Ronan Ryan, Shane Hallihan, Thomas McAuliffe, Shane Hussey, Adam Lardner, Liam O’Riordan, Thomas McAuliffe, and Khaled Abdelrazik.
Castlelyons Juvenile Ladies football.
Under 13 girls win away to Mayfield.
It’s two wins out two for our under 13 girls, after coming through a tough encounter versus Mayfield. In a game where the referee let the game flow the girls had to get were in a more physical encounter than previous games. After a tentative start the girls soon played great football and, in the end, ran out as comfortable winners. Next game for the girls is away to Kilworth on Sunday 27th April
Under 15 girls lose to Kilworth
We made a slow start to this game, and it caught us in the end. The girls did show great resilience to work their way back into the game, outscoring Kilworth in the second half. In the first half our full back line was under huge pressure, and only for some resolute defending from Sarah Fenton, Ella Burke and Caoimhe O’Leary, Kilworth would have been out of sight. We struggled to get the ball into the forward line and the girls themselves said at halftime, that they needed up the work-rate. Up it they did and the second half we made a right good game of it. Evie, Pippa, Gemma all working hard in the middle third of the pitch, took over and now with our forwards getting on the ball the bomber Sophie ended up with a hat trick of goals. Emilia Feehan was linking up the play great and Sarah O’Connor was fighting hard for the ball. Unfortunately, we left some scoring chances after us and ran out of time. Well done on a great second half, and congratulations to Kilworth for taking the win, this time.
Castlelyons camogie.
Emer Hallihan played in Castle Road with the Cork Under 16A on Sunday against Limerick and had a comfortable win which gives them home advantage in the All-Ireland semi-final in two weeks’ time. Best of luck to Emer and the team.
