Castlelyons Notes (3rd Apr)

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 1.4.25.

Junior Hurlers defeat Watergrasshill in East Cork Division Two Hurling League.

Castlelyons 0-16 Watergrasshill 0-14.

Castlelyons came out the right side of a great junior league two game at home to Watergrasshill last Tuesday evening.  Played in ideal conditions under the lights and the pitch having undergone recent verti draining the ‘Hill started well with 0-2 from play.  However, we were moving well, and a Colm McCarthy assist to Brian O’Donovan who put over a point and then Brian Spillane had another from outfield from outfield.  The score was very close all through the first half.  Our backs and particularly the half back line of Seamus Moroney, Stephen Griffey and Colm McCarthy did very well.  Brian O’Donovan put over another 0-5 to leave the score 0-7 to 0-7 at half time.

The second half resumed with business as usual for ‘Dunny’ as he put over two more points from play and Colm McCarthy had a great point from outfield to put us three points ahead.  But back came the ‘Hill and managed a few scores.  It took some great work by Eoin Barry in Goal and the full back line S Casey, L Moroney and M Rosner to keep out their efforts for goals and we survived as points for us by S Cotter and J Cremin keep us two points up.  However, the ‘Hill levelled it again and went ahead by a point.  With five minutes to go the turning point of the game was a great save by our goalie E Barry and Colm McCarthy put in a massive shift as he got a few points, and we ran out 0-16 to 0-14 winners.  Nice to see a blend of older and younger players. Jack Kenny is doing well again and Noel McAuliffe who has returned from Australia and is really hurling fit.  Then we had Olan Linehan and Adam Lardner from the minor team.  So well done lads as that’s two ins from two in the league.

Team: - Eoin Barry, Stephen Casey, Liam Moroney, Matthew Rosner, Shane Moroney, Stephen Griffey, Colm McCarthy, Brian Carroll, Noel McAuliffe, Brian O’Donovan, Brian Spillane, Olan Linehan, Jack Cremin, Shane Cotter and Jack Kenny.  Subs: - Kevin Barry, Tom O’Neill, Adam Lardner, Darragh Bransfield, Stephen Rice, Declan Morrison and Ian O’Sullivan.

Rebel Óg East Under 14 Division 2 Hurling League.

Castlelyons 7-18 St Catherines 0-10.

This was a facile victory for Castlelyons who were at home to St Catherines in the U14 hurling league last Tuesday evening.  The game was played under lights and in perfect weather conditions.  Our lads playing up towards the Abbey in the first half were on top all through with our forwards doing very well and Ned Condon and Alex O’Brien on top at midfield built up a considerable lead by half time of 4-12 mainly through the scoring exploits of Ned Condon and Cionnaith Cotter.  Catherines had a much better second half, but the backs defended well.  Our full back Dylan Barrett limited Sean O’Keeffe to scores from frees while our half back line of Ryan Wallace, Malik Abdelrazik and Carter Clegg catered well with Catherines top man Kenneth O’Connell and their centre forward Noah Keane.  Well done lads and t their management too of Kieran Barrett and Nelius O’Brien wh are bringing the team along nicely.

Panel: - Joshua Kinnane, Robbie Wallace, Dylan Barrett, Tadgh Hickey, Ryan Wallace, Malik Abdelrazik, Carter Clegg, Alex O Brien, Ned Condon, Ewan Mc Carthy, Cionnath Cotter, Jimmy O Riordan, Cathal Henley, John Moloney, Christopher O Sullivan, Liam Martin, Fionn O Neill and Tom Barry with all getting game time.

Rebel Óg East Under 16 Division One Hurling League.

St Colmans 2-21 Castlelyons 3-11

Our Under 16 hurlers travelled to Cloyne for this Division 2 league game with just the bare 15 due to injuries, etc.  Considering the strong opposition our team performed outstanding as St Colmans an amalgamation of Cloyne and Russell Rovers had a much more physical and stronger side.  They had three players who had experienced the Cork underage academy in centre back Darragh Cahill, midfielder Dan Sheehan and corner forward Daniel Walsh who were very good with Walsh scoring eleven points.

However, we were down some of our top players and our lads worked fierce hard but tired towards the end.  Hopefully, in another week or two we will be up to strength again and this will really help the panel as a lot of lads have got game time now and are benefiting from it.  Jimmy Smiddy refereed this game and was up with the play and had a good game too.

Team: - Jude Hallihan, Dylan Barrett, Liam O Riordan, Cathal O Keeffe, Rory Lardner, Ronan Hickey, Cionnaith Cotter, Tomas McAuliffe, Malik Abdelrazik, Rian Lenihan, Khaled Abdelrazik, Ewan McCarthy, Jimmy O Riordan, Eanna Cotter, Tommy Barry.

Congratulations to the Castlelyons National School girls representing Castlelyons Camogie who got to Craobh Scór na bPáistí Uí Mac Coille 2025 held in Lisgoold recently. The girls, Ciara Delea, Sophie Delea, Aalaina Leetch, Lara Finn and Lauren O’Driscoll sang 'Sé Mo Laoch' and 'Spanish Lady' in the Bailéad Ghrúpa.  They were in outstanding form were outright winners capturing the Dave Hoare Cup with Cobh GAA in 2nd place. Maith sibh.

Castlelyons Juvenile Ladies football.

Our Under U13 girls opened their League campaign away to Cobh last Wednesday 25th March. They were defeated in this league last year by Cobh and were a bit nervous heading into this one, but there was no need to, as they hit the ground running, winning on a score line of 4-12 to 3-05. A very impressive scoring rate. Their next game is away to Mayfield on Thursday evening 03rd April.

Our Under 15 girls continue their league campaign with a local derby versus Kilworth on Friday evening at Castlelyons.

Cork play Tipperary in the National Allianz Hurling League Final on Sunday 6.4.25.

One would think that Cork patrons would take hurling finals in their stride but Sundays League Final versus Tipperary was a sell out in forty minutes even though both counties will be playing in the Páirc again two week later, on the 20.4.25.  The buzz around the county is mighty these days as Cork are hoping that Clare will polish up the Liam McCarthy Cup for the Rebels this year and send it down with no questions asked even though Limerick is on the road down too.  Winning the Dr Croke Cup would be a great start. Cork will be missing powerful young forward Brian Hayes on Sunday.  He was in outstanding form up to his recent injury as he had really perfected this skill of the curvilinear running that the media talk about.  This skill is gaining possession ahead of his man and score goals on the turn. Our own Niall O’Leary is another continuing his tremendous form this year as team and management are so focused on days ahead.

The hype for Sunday is because Cork did not play Tipperary in a league final since 1960 when a record crowd came to Cork from far and wide to see the great Christy Ring of Glen Rovers in action.  He had eight All Ireland medals and was the leading scorer in that year’s league with 12-9 at forty years of age having started his career as a twelve-year-old on a minor team.  These days thirty-seven-year-old Pat Horgan, another legend from Glen Rovers and he is the leading Cork scorer with 1-25 but Cork has banged in a load of goals along the way with Brian Hayes on 5-7 and Declan Dalton on 3-13.  While Cork are a young team Tipperary have an even younger crop with nineteen-year-old Darragh McCarthy their leading scorer on 2-44 and they have a few more sharpshooters so expect fireworks here.   Best of luck to our man Niall O’Leary and to the Roches Brian and Eoin of Bride Rovers.   Rebels Abú.

Castlelyons girls on county camogie teams.

Cork play Galway in the Division 2 National League Camogie Final in Croke Park on Saturday 12th April and our own Leah Hallihan is on the panel.  Her sister Emer plays with Cork versus Limerick in their last Under 16 group game on Sunday 6th April in Castle Road Cork.  Aisling Rosner played with the Cork Under 17 camogie team against Tipperary last Saturday.   Aisling Cotter has made both Cork Under 14 panels in camogie and football and games and blitz will be coming up soon.  Comhghairdeas go léir.

Castlelyons defeated by Bishopstown in first round of Premier Camogie Junior League.

Our Premier Junior team had their first outing this league campaign, on a glorious evening in Bishopstown on Monday night. Darren Tobin, along with the Chris Cotter, Liam Moroney and Shane Moroney have just recently come on board in the last couple of weeks to manage this panel. So given the limited training this team have had to date, they played well in the first half against a strong Bishopstown side. The half time score was 5:10 to 2:03 to Bishopstown.

The girls came out in the second half and again played well, some substitutions and positional changes were made and the game finished with a final score of 7-15 to 3-6 in Bishopstown’s favour. The result didn’t reflect the work ethic and effort put in by the team and no doubt they will improve in the next few weeks as the management and coaching settles in.

Rebels Bounty Draw.

A sincere thank you to all who joined the Rebels Bounty Draw as it is expensive to run the club, and your support is outstanding.  The draw for the first three months of 2025 was held on Monday night and congratulations to Johnathan Quirke Castlelyons who won €250 in the January draw. While we didn’t come in for any of the big prizes there are still nine draws to go of €20,000 first prize each month and €100,000 first prize for the month of December so best of luck.  All three Months results January, February and March are available on the website at: - https://gaacork.ie/rebelsbounty/

Coolagown footballers represented Cork in 1901.

I bet you always thought there was more hurling than football in the parish of Castlelyons. Well, the on Thursday 4th April 1901 the Irish Examiner carried a report on the exploits of Coolagown in football.  Cork played Tipperary in on the first Sunday of April 1901 in a contest held in Glanworth.  Undoubtably Coolagown football was very strong at that time as they represented Cork and Skeheenarinky represented Tipperary.  The teams were not picked exclusively from these places with many of the well-known Fermoy team in with Coolagown and the other team had a few Mitchelstown men. When the teams lined out, they were all in peak condition and Coolagown players unquestionably the strongest.  Favoured by the spin of the coin Coolagown played with the wind and a slight hill and immediately invaded their opponent’s territory.  Indeed, both sides rushed the leather in dangerous proximity to the goals, but Coolagown led 1-5 to no score for Skeheenarinky at half time.

On the resumption of play patrons were treated to a fine exhibition of football and even though it was all Tipperary for the first fifteen minutes Cork, represented by Coolagown, repulsed their greatest efforts as they held out for victory. The referee Mr W. Cotter refereed the match in a very impartial manner.  It was mentioned that the local Gaels held the field well and it may be attributed to the friendly way the match was played.  I just wonder were their pitch invasions that time and was it up to local Gaels to keep them off as there was hardly any flashy fencing in 1901.

Condolences.

Castlelyons GAA Club wish to express sincere condolence to the Hallihan family Kill St Anne on the sad passing of Elizabeth, to the Turner family Kenny’s Cross on the sad passing of James and to the Dixon family on the sad passing of Phillipa. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a ainmneacha go léir.
