- Mar 24,2025
Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 24.3.25.
Second league defeat four our senior hurlers.
Red FM Hurling League Division Three.
Castlelyons 0-9 Bride Rovers 0-18.
We made the trip over the road to Rathcormac last Sunday morning for our second league game versus the Rovers. The morning was crisp, cool and perfect for hurling. Our warmup was impressive but when the team lined up, we were down over half of last years championship side for various reasons. The Rovers were 0-3 up after five minutes but Castlelyons fought their way back and it was 0-2 to 0-5 after fifteen minutes with frees from Colm McCarthy and Brian O’Donovan. Dara Spillane was having a right battle to manage Rover’s sharpshooter Adam Walsh, with Oscar Hallihan and the backs in general were doing well. Colm McCarthy, Shane Moroney scored points from play and Barry Murphy had an outstanding score from out the wing. However, Rovers kept the scoreboard ticking over too as they led 0-6 to 0-11 at half time.
As the second half progressed, we were overcome by a very strong Rovers display with Eoin Roche, Cillian Tobin especially and all the back getting on top of our forwards and limiting us to just 0-2 and those points came from Colm McCarthy and Oscar Hallihan. They moved the ball very well from midfield as Adam Walsh and Paddy Flynn got a few fine scores to give them a nine-point victory 0-18 to 0-9. The game itself was fairly physical, but fair and referee Pa Beausang had a very good game. Our next game in this League is on Tuesday 5th April at home to Blackrock with a 7.30pm throw in. While they Blackrock were defeated 0-16 to 0-18 by Blarney in their last outing it was a cracking game by all reports, and they will be coming down to Castlelyons fairly confident. We do need more a few more of our regulars back on the field, if possible, to settle down and assist our younger players as a bit of balance is vital. But it’s early days.

League win for our Under 15 girls.
Our Under 15 girls kicked off their League campaign with a very good win against Castlemartyr, in atrocious conditions on Saturday afternoon. Playing against a gale force wind, our backs were pinned back for the first 10 minutes, but there was no way past our full back line of Ella, Caoimhe and Michaela. Despite being on top with the aid of the wind pressure Castlemartyr could only put a point on the board. Then against the run of play, Eve O’Doherty came bursting out of centre back and in a sweeping move fed Sophie Crowley at full forward, who shot powerfully past the Castlemartyr keeper. This was quickly followed by a long-range effort from Sarah O’Connor that deceived the Castlemartyr defence to nestle in the back of the net. The girls got well on top and the tenacious Aoibhe McAuliffe stole a ball from a Castlemartyr defender to score a great point. Sophie Crowley got her second goal of the day, from a lovely touch forward by Lily. Another superb running move against the wind involving the hard-working Gemma was rounded off by another point to end the half.
With aid of the wing in the second half the girls changed from a running game to letting the ball in quick and two more goals followed. Castlemartyr weren’t finished and after a good spell, scored a goal of their own. However, the girls upped their game again with Pippa and Eimear tackling and chasing every ball to keep Castlemartyr pinned back. There was no let-up in the wind and rain, the girls continued working hard all the way to the final whistle and deserved win and hopefully some hot chocolates on the way home. It was a credit to both teams to play so well in such difficult conditions. Castlelyons Abú Our next league game in the Under 15 League is at home to Kilworth on Friday 4th April at 7pm.
Under 13 Ladies Football League postponed.
Our Under 13 League game versus Cobh unfortunately was postponed due to weather conditions on Friday evening and is now fixed for the Cobh venue for this coming Wednesday 25th March at 5pm.
Rebel Óg East Under 18 Division Two Football League.
Castlelyons 2-13 Kilworth/Araglen Óg 1-11
On Saturday evening our minor footballers played their second league game of the campaign and came away with the points after a good performance. We played against the wind in the first half and played some very good football where teamwork was to the fore and led thanks to a well-taken goal from Adam Lardner 1-5 to 0-6. In the second half we played with the conditions and our use of the long ball was quickly turned into a goal by Khaled Abdelrazik following a great ball by Dylan Leetch. Some very good scores from Sean O Callaghan, Dylan, Khaled and Adam followed. There was a late revival from Kilworth/Araglen Óg, but we held on for a convincing victory. Lads displayed good teamwork, and our captain Sean Og Maguire led well from the center back. Our next game is in the hurling league versus Ballycastle Gaels in Ballyhooly on Wednesday 2nd April at 6.30pm.

Rebel Óg East Under 14 Division Two Football League.
Castlelyons 3-14 St Catherine’s 1-3.
Castlelyons played into a strong wind in the first half, and created plenty of chances, unlucky not to finish them, hitting the crossbar three times but did manage 0-3. Good defensive work from Christoper O Sullivan, Robbie Wallace and Carter Clegg and a couple of good saves from Dylan Barrett limited St Catherine’s to 1-3 in the first half.
In the second half we the second half improved a lot and played much of the second half in the opposition half, well taken goals from Ned Condon and Cionnaith Cotter and excellent points from these lads led to a facile victory in the end. We had two under twelves on the team, Robbie Wallace and Liam Martin. They both played well.

A visit to Kilmagner National School.
There are a lot of changes in Kilmagner NS since its foundation in 1878 with the first Principal Mr Patrick Walsh (1878 to 1911) and they now have 64 students. A fleeting visit to the school recently brought back memories of my own school days albeit many miles away in the County Clare. It was lovely fine day, and the school is in a rural setting. I met Ms O’Brien from Liscarroll and showed me out the back to lovely piece of ground given to the school some time ago courtesy of a local. The new Principal Mr Stephen Bennett was conducting a hurling session with the pupils and assisted by Mr Ronan Maher, a Tipperary man from Burncourt on temporary assignment. Stephen a Waterford County hurler and former All Star has recently taken up his post in Kilmagner and is a man with a keen interest and sport and the continuance of a strong academic learning environment. He has replaced Mr Trevor Gumbridge who has taken up the role of Principal in Ballyhooly NS. Comhghairdeas to both on their appointments.
Condolence.
Castlelyons GAA Club wish to extend sympathies to the Fitzgerald family, Midleton on the sad passing of Ger. One of Cork’s greatest hurlers he gave us many cherished moments on the field of play. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm dílis.
