Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 17.3.25.

A last appeal to join the Rebels Bounty Draw.

The Rebel bounty draw will be closing on Thursday 27th March at 1pm. We wish to thank all who have joined so far as we are just about covering ourselves with the County Board.  However, to make any profit the sales from tickets we can sell from now to the 27.3.25 go directly to our club.  This helps run the club and assist with development. There is a total of €500,000 in prizes in 12 monthly draws with 360 chances to win with the first prize every month €20,000 and €100,000 first prize for December 2025.  As a senior club and pushing again for success this year remember we led the famous Glen Rovers last year by a point with six minutes to go and had a most encouraging year.  You can help our Club by purchasing a ticket from any one of our committee members or Mick Spillane Club Treasurer. Thanks so much for your support in the past and hoping you can continue to do so and that we will have others join this great Draw.

Rebel Óg East Division One Under 16 Hurling League

Castlelyons 1-18 St Colmcilles 2-14.

There was a minute’s silence prior to the start of this game Rebel Óg East Under 16 Division One league game in Castlelyons.  It was as a mark of respect to the late Darragh McCarthy Midleton & MTU GAA who suffered fatal injuries in a fall last week.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainm dilís.  Conditions were ideal and we started well with points from K Abdelrazik and T McAuliffe (0-3) and N Condon as we led 0-5 to 0-4 after twelve minutes.  The hurling was very good, and a fierce battle endued at midfield between our men N Condon and T McAuliffe and A Sheehan and S Kelleher of Colmcilles. Our goalie J Hallihan who was safe all through brought off a great save from A Sheehan.  We were leading 0-6 to 0-4 when a M Cotter netted for Colmcilles.  We were under pressure when St Colmcilles goaled by banging on a ground ball to the net. But K Abdelrazik cut through to goal for us leaving it 1-9 to 2-5 and we exchanged points to leave the half time score 1-10 to 2-6.

The standard of hurling really lifted more in the second half as St Colmcilles really took over for a while even though K Abdelrazik and N Condon had 0-1 apiece.  Our backs really done well under pressure as both Liam O’Riordan at full back and Rory Hickey in the centre got to grips with stronger opposition.  St Colmcilles were leading 2-13 to 1-14 with but 0-2 from K Abdelnazik put us back into the game and at this stage we had lads hurling well in all over the place especially our half back line.  T McAuliffe had a score to level it and as both teams battled for the winner McAuliffe again won possession and sent over from outfield to give Castlelyons victory in a great game.  All the panel had a part to play, and all done so well as Colmcilles are an amalgamation of Whitechurch and Carrignabhfear. Castlelyons 2-18 Ballygiblin 0-8

Our minor hurlers played Ballygiblin in the new pitch at 2pm on St Patricks Day. They started well and as our backs and midfield were hurling strong.  The chances were coming our way as Adam Lardner scored 0-3 and Shane Hallihan 0-1.  Ronan Ryan who was winning a lot of possession slipped out a lovely pass to Kevine Barry and Kevin buried it to the net to leave us 1-4 to 0-3 up with fifteen minutes gone.  Their keeper made Jack Sheedy made a great save from a shot by Shane Hallihan, but Eoin Ryan finished the rebound to the net.  Points from Lardner, Ryan, and Eoin Hickey left us with a commanding 2-9 to 0-4 lead at half time.

Ballygiblin improved their game in the second half even though their strong midfielder Harrison Conway had to retire through injury and Castlelyons introduced several substitutes.  All our backs done well with Dylan Leetch fetching well.  Dara Fleming, Adam Lardner and Khaled Abdelrazik had points to leave the full-time score 2-18 to 0-8 and a convincing victory for Castlelyons.  Ballygiblin were missing some players and did not have a lot done.  While it is early times it was a good start.  Next up in the Under 18 football grade is Castlelyons v Kilworth this Saturday 22nd March, at 7pm in Castlelyons and your support is appreciated please.

Castlelyons Juvenile and Camogie Clubs take part in St Patricks Day Parade in Fermoy.

Fermoy celebrated their fortieth St Patrick’s Day Parade on a cold but dry morning with over fifty-five groups taking part from Fermoy and surrounding areas.  John Fant, Fermoy, founder of the Thomas Kent Pipe Band was Grand Marshel.  There was a huge crowd and a great atmosphere in the town.  Comhghairdeas to Castlelyons Juvenile and Camogie Clubs who took part in the Parade and they turned out in style.

Congratulations to Charlie McCarthy on his win in Cheltenham.

Heartiest congratulations to Charlie McCarthy whose horse Kopek Des Bordes won the Michael O’Sullivan Novices’ Hurdle in Cheltenham.  The horse is owned by Charlie along with his four sons through Monabeg Investments Ltd and looks destined for even bigger days. What an atmosphere as the horse came into the winner’s enclosure and the fans singing Olé Olé Olé.  There were some poignant moments too as Charlie spoke about his own recent illness and spoke about the late Michael O’Sullivan a jockey who recently suffered fatal injuries in a fall in Thurles.  Charlie through the company McCarthy Insurance Group is one of Castlelyons GAA sponsors and, of course, a sponsor of Cork GAA plus many more sports groups.  Great to see a local winner and especially a great sponsor of all sports in the locality.
