Junior Cs excellent performance
Glenville 0-14
Ballinacurra 4-7 (19)
Glenville Junior Cs opened their league campaign with a very good performance against a very sharp Ballinacurra team. Glenville were tight in numbers but put out a strong team with a very good combination of youth and experience, the game being the first chance for some of the minor football squad to play adult football.
Three early goals in the first half before the Glenville team had time to settle meant that the Glenville men had an uphill battle but settled very well into the game. The first half saw some excellent team performances as well as individual performances, notably the mid-field pairing of Mike O’Riordan and Conor McHugh which saw Mike score 0-5 (0-2 in the first half and 0-3 in the second half), while Conor McHugh played an exceptionally good game in his first senior football game in midfield and contributed a point in each half from play from good runs and well struck shots.
The defence consisted of Stephen Ryan in goals who made some very good saves. The fullback line of Dean Field, Shane Clarke and Colm Buckley stopped and turned over many Ballinacurra attacks and provided the base for Glenville counterattacks.
Sean O’Leary was a powerhouse at half back and also scored a point while Mike Murphy and Will Sheehy brought experience, physical presence, and cuteness to the defence.
The half forward line was a very experienced line consisting of Mike Murphy who scored an excellent point, Denis Buttimer and Alan Busteed, who were excellent at supplying ball to the forwards. Paddy O’Sullivan, drawing on his Carlow football career, kicked a beautiful point in the first half, while Johnny Dorgan was fast and smart and caused considerable problems for the Ballinacurra defence. Liam Keane was the stand-out forward, scoring 0-4 over the game and took the responsibility for the frees in the forward area and kicked three out of three excellent frees in the second half which brought Glenville into the game.
Glenville improved as the game progressed, but their significant improvement was too late in the game. Overall, it was a very good opening game and a great opening experience to build on.
Squad: Stephen Ryan, Dean Field, Shane Clarke, Colm Buckley, Mike Murphy (Glenville), Sean O'Leary, Will Sheehy, Mike O'Riordan, Conor McHugh, Alan Busteed, Denis Buttimer, Mike Murphy (Condonstown), Paddy O'Sullivan, Liam Keane, Johnny Dorgan, Adam Hennessy, Olan Hartnett, Colm Curtin, Joe O'Callaghan.
