Senior Hurlers lose at home to Mallow in League.
Red FM Division Three Cork Hurling League.
Castlelyons 2-14 Mallow 0-21.
Well, our senior hurlers in the middle of a conditioning programme took to the field on Saturday in the first league game versus Mallow. Although it was wet in the morning it was good for the game and the pitch was in great order. Mallow started well putting three points on the board but point from Barry Murphy, Brian Donovan and two from Colm McCarthy in between another from Mallow levelled it. We continued to match Mallow to half time leaving it 0-11 apiece at half time.
Mallow were first to score again in the second half, but Dave Morrison banged in a goal for us with Colm McCarthy adding a point from a free and then scoring another goal for us. However, a couple of points from Mallow on the trot brought the mack into the game again and while we managed two more points Mallow finished the better. We did have an opportunity to level it from a free before the final whistle, but Mallow ran out winners on the score 0-21 to 2-14. Mallow did have a little bit more hurling done and a challenge game played and were sharper.
While we were down several players through injury and unavailability it was encouraging to see a few young players step and do very well. Our next game is on Sunday 23rd March versus Bride Rovers away at 11.30am. The Rovers were surprisingly defeated 2-21 to 0-12 by Blarney this weekend so no doubt they will endeavour to get back to winning ways. The big result of the weekend in our league was Lisgoold defeating Courcey Rovers 0-21 to 1-15
Team: Jack Barry, Rob Feeney, Dara Spillane, Brian Spillane, Peter Roche, Oscar Hallihan, Brian Flynn, James Kearney, Colm McCarthy 1-6, Ronan Fenton, Barry Murphy 0-2, Eoin Maye 0-2, Shane Cotter 0-1, Dave Morrison 1-1, Brian O’Donovan 0-2. Subs: Matthew Rosner, Jack Kenny, Olan Linehan, Jack Cremin, Mike Griffin, Stephen Casey.

Castlelyons 2-15 Cobh 6-3.
Our Under 14 footballers had their first league game versus Cobh in Castlelyons on Sunday. Conditions were ideal as Castlelyons played towards the Ballyarra goal in the first half with a slight breeze. Cobh were a much stronger side, but our lads moved the ball about very well and took their chances. Our backs worked very hard to limit Cobh to just two scores in the first half as it was 1-8 to 1-1 at half time.
In the second half with the aid of a slight breeze and using their strength Cobh came back into the game big time as they rattled off a few goals and looked as if they were going to win handy. But we were brave and with two under 12s playing and Dylan Barrett playing on with an injured shoulder we fought hard. A few points from Ned Condon and one from John Moroney kept us in it. Cobh pressed again but Ned Condon came through after a good movement to score a goal and Fionnaith Cotter put over the equaliser. Referee Denis Motherway blew the final whistle in a hard but exciting game. A great show by our lads.

East Cork Junior 2 Hurling League – Tommy O’Sullivan Cup.
Castlelyons 2-15 Midleton 1-14.
Our junior hurlers played their first league game versus Midleton in Castlelyons on Sunday morning. Conditions were good Castlelyons settled early with a point from Brian Carroll and a great goal from Brian Spillane who soloed in parted to Jack Cremin and took the return pass driving it low to the net. Midleton stayed in the game through some very accurate long range free taking. We did defend very well as our defence turned over a lot of ball. Points from Jack Cremin, Shane Cotter (3) Mike Griffin and Brian Carroll dept the scoreboard ticking over for us. Midleton banged in a goal to level it at half time at 1-7 apiece.
The second half was keenly contested as Shane Cotter again sent over two frees and Olan Linehan had the score of the day with a point from out in the wing. Cotter scored again and then good work by Jack Cremin releasing the ball to Linehan who bang low to the net for our second goal. Midleton did put over four points in reply, but our lads finished well with Jack Cremin, Stephen Rice, Jack Kenny and Brian Carroll scoring points to give us a good win by four points. A lot of hurling left yet ach tosach maith leath na hoibre and it was a very encouraging display. Comhghairdeas to the team and management.

Castlelyons 3-5 St Vincents 4-15.
Castlelyons minor footballers travelled to the city for a game with St Vincents on Sunday. They were missing five players due to other sports, but they will be available for future games. This resulted in playing five U16 lads playing and while they did very well, they could not match a stronger Vincents side who won convincingly in the end. Cork hurlers close in on a possible League Final as they trounce Clare.
Cork travelled to Ennis on Sunday and thought the Banner a lesson in hurling by banging in six goals in a most convincing 6-20 to 0-23 win. This latest victory puts Cork second in the table and now look the real deal with a possible league final to come. Declan Dalton of Fr O’Neills really fulfilled his potential by scoring 2-6. Our own man Niall O’Leary had another fine game limiting All-Star Mark Rogers to just one point while Brian Roche from Bride Rovers had a good game in the forwards. These sides meet again in the Munster championship on Easter Sunday 20th April in Páirc Chíosóg Ennis. The place will be packed, and it should be a cracker. But with the current form of the Rebels and the Banner going poor it is no wonder that Cork and Limerick are runaway favourites for the All-Ireland final but what about Tipperary. However, the same again on Easter Sunday and it could be the start of a great year for Cork.
Facilities Development Programme.
A proposal for the construction of toilets at the back of the Stand was agreed on at the last Club meeting. The Steering will proceed with application for planning and endeavour construction as soon as possible.
Join Castlelyons GAA Club as an Adult OAP Member.
At our monthly meeting club treasurer Mick Spillane expressed satisfaction that all players and students, etc had paid membership. However, there was advice to those who wish to join the Adult / OAP membership as this entitles you to being in the draw for championship allocations and All Ireland tickets. With Cork in the shake up for the league the interest for the championship will be serious. There will be a club allocation for the two away championship games versus Clare and Limerick whereas it will be general sale for the two home games versus Waterford and Tipperary. So, club membership is vital to be in the draws for tickets. it is worth it. You can still pay the old-fashioned way as well. Just contact one of the club officers or club registrar Marie Barry.
