Bride Rovers Notes (27th Feb)
- Feb 27,2025
JUNIOR GET MEDALS. On Saturday night last our 2024 Junior League winners were presented with their medals. At a pleasant function in Barry’s Bar the East Cork JHL Division 2 winners were presented with their winners medals by Club President Pat O Connor. In total forty players played during the 8 game campaign with a Final win over Midleton in Cobh. Fifty years ago, in 1975, Pat O Connor captained our Junior B team that won the East Cork Championship. Thanks to all the players and selectors who brought the League Title to the Club in 2024. The full panel of players was as follows; Shaun Knox (Captain) , Conor Barry, Ronan O'Riordan, Oisin Roche, Eldon O'Connor, Cillian Barry, Adam Hayes, Ryan O'Callaghan, Damien Buckley, Liam Forde, Fergus Collins, Mike Liddane, Liam Collins, Kieran Cotter, Seamus Ahern, Nicky Kelleher, DJ Cahill, William Finnegan, John Buckley, Shane O'Flynn, Frank O'Flynn, Jack Connor, John O'Sullivan Brian Collins, Jamie Peters, Tomas Macak, Jason Pratt, Ciaran O'Dowd, Cormac O'Sullivan, Jordan Mannix, Adam Hynes, Cillian O'Sullivan, Cian O'Connor, Ben Knox Jack Kearney, Kamso Obi, Louis Roche, Eddie Cashman, Oran Kielty, Gearoid Gubbins.
WEATHER UPSETS. Last weekend the adverse weather with heavy rain caused havoc with sport. We were fixed to travel to Cloyne for our first Junior Hurling League game (Division 1) but the match was postponed and will be refixed by the Board. This coming Sunday we are down to play Glenville in our opening game in Division 2 of the Junior Football League, at home at 3 o clock.
QUIZ RESULTS. Our annual juvenile quiz was held in the Rathcormac Inn with 24 tables in contention. As is the norm now we used the Speedquiz format under quizmaster Patrick Croke which enabled a fast format with some elements of jeopardy thrown in. Winners on the night were Seamus Ahern, John O'Sullivan, Jack O'Connor, Michael Friel and Tom Murray. 2nd was a nearly all ladies team of David Barry, Katie Quirke, Aoife Cowman, Fiona Barry and Anna Murray.
Our annual wooden spoon winners included Ger Healy, Dan McHugh....John Kearney was unavailable to collect his spoon out of pure embarrassment!!
Thanks to all who attended, Paddy our MC, Brendan Lyons, Michelle O'Connor for organising and Emma Roddis and the staff of the Rathcormac Inn for their assistance.
UNDER 16 Premier 2 football v St. Michael's.
We were at home to the Blackrock side in our first under 16 football game for the 2025 season last weekend and we opened our league campaign with a dominant display against St. Michaels. Goals from Finn, Cody and Donagh were expertly taken with points coming from Finn, Mícháel, Cathal and a left footed cracker from Dylan kept us in total control from the start of the game. Sincere thanks to Denis Ahern and his grounds crew who had the new pitch in Pynes in great nick and also had the pitch lined....no 2 pointers on this occasion but surely they'll come!
Next game is Sunday next v Kiltha Og in Dungourney in the Premier 2 league.

CORK LOSE ON THE DOUBLE. It was double league loss for Cork last weekend. The hurlers were away to Monaghan on Saturday afternoon and the hurlers in Thurles on Saturday night. Both teams lost so this weekends games are vital. It’s a unique triple decker on Saturday in Pairc Ui Chaoimh with the Ladies football team playing Roscommon at 3 the hurlers meeting Kilkenny at 5 and John Cleary’s side facing the Rossies at pm.
GAA CONGRESS. Donegal town was the venue for the GAA’s Annual Congress last weekend with a big number of Motions debated and voted on. One motion passed has the effect of replacing the term Public Relations Officer with Communications Officer -but there is still no pension going with the job!
The very first motion was to do with the handpass. As per the GAA's official website: This motion from the Nenagh Éire Óg club regarding The Playing Rules of Hurling proposed that players won't be able to handpass the sliotar, from the same hand that is holding the sliotar. You would have to handpass from the other hand -but the other hand would still be holding the hurley! The motion was defeated in any case. There will be major changes in the All Ireland Senior Football for 2026. The 2026 Football Championship will change format after the GAA Congress voted to scrap the round-robin stage.
Next year's All-Ireland Championship will, again, be a 16-team format. The eight provincial finalists will play the top eight ranked league sides in Round 1 of the Championship. Round 2A will see the winners play each other, and the victors progress to the quarter-finals. Losers of Round 1 play each other in Round 2,B and the winners of that round play the losers of Round 2A in Round 3. Sounds complicated -it is!
LIGHTING UP WALK. The Monday night series ended last Monday and we will have full details and ‘thanks’ next week.
CAR BOOT SALE EVENING. The Car Boot Sale Parish Committee held a lovely Social evening in the GAA Clubrooms on last Thursday night. It was a get-together as a ‘Thank You’ from the Committee of the car Boot Sale for all those who volunteer their time each month organising and stewarding. Over the years the Car Boot Sales have generated huge finances for so many organisations and groups in the parish. We in Bride Rovers have benefited greatly and were delighted to host the gathering last Thursday evening. Next Sunday is Car Boot Sale day once more so all help will be greatly appreciated on the day and on Saturday morning.
