DEATH OF PADDY CULLEN.
One of the great GAA personalities of our capitol city , Paddy Cullen, died recently. He was the Dublin goalie for thirteen years, from 1966 until his retirement in 1979. He was the No 1 on Heffo’s Army when they made the historic breakthrough in 1974 and with the Dubs won two more Sam Maguires in 1976 and 1977. Dublin contested 6 All Irelands in a row from 1974 til 1979. He won 4 All Stars and two NFL titles and was Dublin manager when they had that 4 game epic sage with Meath. A humble man Paddy’s efforts ‘to get back in time’ as Mikey Sheehy took that famous quick free in the 1978 Final will be remembered forever. Famous Sports journalist Con Houlihan summed it up so well ‘And while all that was going on, Mikey Sheehy was running up to take the kick-and suddenly Paddy dashed back towards his goal like a woman who smells a cake burning’ Brian Mullins, Anthony Hanahoe and now Paddy Cullen from that great Dublin side have now gone to their eternal reward along with John Egan, Paidi O Shea and Tim Kennelly of the Kerry team.
RED FM SENIOR HURLING FIXTURES.
Our 2025 REDFM SHL fixtures are as follows; March 9th away to Blarney, March 23rd at home to Castlelyons, April 4th away to Russell Rovers, April 20th at home to Newcestown, May 4th away to Mallow, May 18th away to Lisgoold, May 31st at home to Blackrock, June 15th away to Courceys and June 29th at home to Ballinhassig.
TEDDY REMEMBERED. It will be a nostalgic occasion in Riverstown on Saturday April 5th when the late great Teddy McCarthy will be remembered in a very fitting way. On that day the Riverstown Sportsfield will be renamed in honour of Teddy and a specially commissioned statue of the Cork dual star will be unveiled.
EAST CORK CENTENARY BOOK.
Copies of the Imokilly 2010-2024 History Book are now available at €40 per copy and can be ordered from Club Officers.
GAA CONGRESS. This time last year all eyes were on Newry for the 2024 GAA’s Annual Congress. It was a special event as the New GAA President Jarlath Burns was being installed. The Silverbridge man is a bliain in the job now. He had the unique honour of presenting the Sam Maguire Cup to his own County team, an Armagh side that included his son Jarly Og. It’s been an eventful year in the GAA with change on many fronts including the New Football Rules. Issues like the Split Season, National League Children’s Charging, Amateur Status and the demands on GAA Volunteers continue to be debated and discussed. No doubt the Annual gathering in Donegal this coming weekend will be a lively affair. In twelve month’s time the next President -an Uachtarain Tofa, will be chosen -how time flies. One very interesting Motion on the Clar for the weekend is proposed by Noel McCaffrey the former Dublin footballer. The Motion seeks to make it compulsory for Inter County players to play a minimum number of games with their Club -if they don’t then they are ineligible for the County team!
CORK and TIPP on SATURDAY.
Since they first met in a ‘great challenge contest’ in Glenagowl back in 1741 the hurlers of Cork and Tipperary have created a special and lasting rivalry. The latest renewal of the Rebel v Premier will be played in Tom Semple’s Field in Thurles on next Saturday at half 7. Both teams are motoring fairly well and a win here for either side would almost guarantee involvement in the latter stages of the National Hurling League. There wont be dust in the square nor too many ham sandwiches and flasks but it should be a great game. Best of luck to Brian and Eoin and their Cork colleagues. We wish a speedy recovery to the Cork players on the injury list at present.
Weather Halts the Gallop of our Walking Group.
Following a lovely walk in Castlelyons last week to support John Drislane, it was due to be back to Rathcormac last Monday for our final night of walking. Due to the heavy rain however, our final night of the _Ireland Light's Up_ walking initiative was postponed. We have planned that this event will now take place on next Monday Feb 22nd. Refreshments will be served, and we invite all to take part.
Rathcormac Clubs and Societies.
Last Saturday, our club met those people new to our parish at the Clubs and Societies day. We were nestled between Rathcormac Community First Responders and Bridevale Athletics Club at a very successful event. Well done to the community council for organising this event. From scouts to soccer to the social initiative outings, there was clearly something for everyone.
Last Man Standing
With our senior panel now preparing for League action, they are holding their annual 'Last Man Standing' competition, based on weekly Premier League soccer results.
If your chosen team wins, you remain in the competition week by week. If not, you are out! All entries had to be in by Friday 14th of February at 6pm. To take part, please contact any player or coordinator Eoin Roche on 0863212831
