Castlelyons Notes (10th Feb)
- Feb 10,2025
Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 10.2.25.
Football back in Castlelyons with a win in the Under 21 Football Championship.
Castlelyons 4-8 Bride Rovers 2-8.
Our U21 lads who had a well merited win over Bride Rovers in an exciting encounter with fast moving end to end football the order of the day. There was a little excitement even before game as there was a clash of jersey colours, but any problem can be solved when it is small, so Bride Rover turned the jerseys inside out to white. The game was played in accordance with the new rules which are both praised and critiqued in the National League scene to date. The referee Peter O’Donovan had his umpires plus a strong knowledge of the rules and supervised the game well which added to the spectacle.
Played in front of a good crowd the football was relatively fast. Some minutes into the game Dylan Leetch soloed through and parted to Jack Cremin who set up Adam Lardner and he obliged with a good shot to the net. Rovers came back with a great two pointer from Conor O’Riordan. There was some good play by both teams, but Castlelyons managed another great move between Jack Cremin and Adam Lardner who had a second goal. Then Jack had a fisted point and Lardner banged in another for a hat trick in the 17th Minute. Rovers got back into it and had two points from play. At this stage Rovers applied a lot of pressure, but Brian Spillane and Matthew Rosner defended well as did all the backs. It was nice to see good catches and marks with Olan Linehan doing well. We were luck a few times as young Kevin Barry made some great saves, finding his men in clearing and his kick out was going a good distance. Dylan Leetch and Cees Kouwenberg added points to leave the score 3-3 to 0-5 at half time.
The second half was even more exciting with Mark Cullinane scoring 0-I after a good run and Rovers hit back for two points from Conor O’Leary. At this stage Rovers put on savage pressure, but our backs held out and they were helped by goalie Kevin Barry made some great saves again. His kickouts were going well and one finding Dylan Leetch made ground and parted to Jack Cremin, and he broke the tackle to get in for our fourth goal. Adam Lardner got two more points, but Rovers came back, and Shane O’Dowd banged in a penalty. In a welter of excitement Rovers Frank O’Flynn scored another goal, and it was game on at 4-6 to 2-8. But we held out and Cas Kwoenberg put over two frees for a convincing win. The management outfit of Liam Moroney, Chris Cotter and Brian O’Donovan done well to get the lads together and while they are young it is a good start to adult football again. The next game is on Sunday 16th February versus Cobh in the semi-final and there will be a toss for venue.
Panel: Kevin Barry, Oisín Morrisson, Gearóid McCarthy, Tom O’Neill, Brian Spillane, John O’Neill, Mark Cullinane, Dylan Leetch, Olan Lenehan, Adam Lardner, Cees Kouwenberg, Jack Cremin, Oran Hickey, Anthony Moran, Shane Hallihan, Shane Hussey, Aaron Fenton, Alex Quirke, Cathal Sheehan, Ronan Ryan, Ryan Stack, Sean O’Callaghan, Leon Shanahan, Ciarán Murphy.
Point to Point Races in Knockanard on Sunday 16.2.25
All roads lead to Knockanard Point to Point Races on this Sunday the 16th of February. Castlelyons GAA will have a refreshments tent present where you can have a soup and sandwich or tea/coffee, etc. Please stop by if you’re feeling peckish. All money raised will be going towards the development fund so any help at all would be fantastic.
This year Knockanard share racing with just Nenagh, Co. Tipperary and Tenahely, Co. Wicklow so we are expecting a strong crowd. Commencing at 1pm there are six races on the card including the Famous Banks race. This open lightweight exciting Race recommenced in 2023 after a 70-year lapse. There are some banks including two drop banks, up bank and a double bank, along with a laurel hedge, point to point fences and an easy fix hurdle will be jumped a few times over a three and a half-mile course. There is a Dog Show on the Day. Members of the Cork senior hurling team are attending on the day with our own man Niall O’Leary as they have no game this weekend. So, all in all you are guaranteed a great day out.
Request from East Cork Board - helpers for Referees.
During a recent meeting of the East Cork Board an Cathaoirleach, Ms Avril Geary, outlined the need to help referees and with the new football rules and with the hurling league games. The Board forwarded a form to each of the 22 clubs for completion and action. We cannot have games without referees, we do not have a referee representing our club, so it would be great to have a few helpers.

Castlelyons GAA Monthly Meeting – Concern expressed at County Board Charges.
There was serious concern expressed at all the extra levies clubs at our club meeting on Monday night. These include the new IT Tarriff, a youth levy, Insurance increase on affiliations, €2 increase on entry to games, referees’ fees at the end of the year will be passed on to clubs, Club monies from gate receipts will be reduced from 10 to five per cent. Selling tickets for a ‘Win a House Draw’, that cannot impact on the sale of Rebel Bounty Tickets. Also, the fact that this was detailed on the media without the club knowing about it just two days after the county board meeting. They have now requested the delegates to propose a vote on these levies and if such a vote is lost, we will pay but such an imposition without proper consultation with clubs is not good enough.
Concluding week of Ireland Lights Up and 40 Day Health Challenge in Castlelyons GAA.
The clock is certainly turning with the evening getting long and John Drislane is on the run in as he completes 40 days of a spartan health challenge albeit with good advice and checks by the overall Leaders. This Monday evening was rocking again with so many going on our beautiful Walkway. We had special guests St Nicholas’s Juvenile runners, Bride Rovers ‘Ireland Lights Up’ Group, Cllr Frank O’Flynn, a few members of our GAA Club and so many locals. Helen, Andrea and Julie and Cathy helped with refreshments.
John has put in a massive effort as he put himself out there in public and social media in a what is regarded as a very serious Challenge. If there are any of our GAA teams or any Group that have not taken part to date, there are just a few days left so give it your support. A special thanks to Mike Carey of Bride Rovers and his members who came over from Rathcormac this evening as your support is really appreciated. Tickets in connection with the event and in Support of Cork Simon and Friends of Dean and Padraig are still on sale at €5 for three and there are so many great prizes too.
On Sunday the 16th day of February There will be a celebratory party in the Community Centre from 2pm to 4pm with some music, chat and refreshments. Monies from the special raffle will be presented to Sork Simon and Friends of Dean and Padraig. We will have a cupla focal and a special talk from John on his forty days of dedication to improving his health through eating well, moving more and improving his mental health. All are welcome.
