BRIDE ROVERS
U21 Footballers lose out to Castlelyons
The first round of the U21 football championship took over the weekend. Bride Rovers were drawn to play our neighbours Castlelyons, who had home advantage. As neither Bride Rovers nor Castlelyons participated in U21 football last year, it was great to see both clubs competing this year.
Castlelyons started strongly and had two goals scored in the first few minutes. This created an uphill battle for our players, who responded well. The first score came from the boot of Conor O'Riordan, who scored from outside the new 40m arc, which is now rewarded with two points. Conor followed this with another point, before cousins Ciarán and Shane O'Dowd scored points to leave to 3-3 to 0-5 down at half-time.
We matched the physicality and skill of Castlelyons in the second half, and were denied some goal scoring opportunities by the efforts of the Castlelyons goalkeeper. Points were scored by Jack Mannix, Conor O'Riordan and captain Frank O'Flynn. This was undone by a fourth Castlelyons goal. We put the Castlelyons defence under enormous pressure in the last quarter, and while we did score two goals (Shane O'Dowd and Frank O'Flynn), we were unable to bridge the gap.
The score at the end of the 60 minutes was Bride Rover 2-8, Castlelyons 4.8. Thanks to the panel of players who put in great effort over the last four weeks. A majority of the team are still in the minor grade, with six still playing Under 17, so there is plenty more years for these young players to progress in this grade.
Team: Ronan O'Riordan, Ronan Barry, Jack Lynch, Gary Quirke, Gearoid O'Connell, Luke Harrington, Conor O'Riordan, Cormac Barry, Gearoid Gubbins, Shane O'Dowd, Ciaran O'Dowd, Frank O'Flynn, Jack Mannix, Matthew Kenny, Eanna Lyons, Sean Dowling, Shane Prendergast, Adam Kelleher, Rudi Gharib, James Larkin, Adam Hynes.
Sincere thanks to our management team, Noel Crowley, James Bermingham, Pa O'Driscoll for taking on this role, and with such a young team on duty the seeds for success in the u21 Football championship in the years ahead have been sown.
