Mulcahy Steel East Cork U21 B Football Championship Quarter Final, Youghal, Sunday February 9th2025

Glenbower Rovers 3-08, Youghal 3-07                                Reiteoir: Shane Hodgins

The pristine pitch in Youghal GAA’s Magners Hill grounds was the setting for the opening match of the 2025 campaign for our Under 21 footballers. With this being the first match under the “new rules” - heralding surely the most radical transformation to Gaelic Football since the goalposts reduced from four to two in 1910 – the players, mentors and attendance followed the directions of referee Shane Hodgins and his team of officials very intently. Given the amount of learning and quick thinking on your feet which all referees will now require, Shane did a very good job indeed.

The match itself was played in a very competitive but sporting manner, with all players quickly learning to hand the ball to their opponent once a foul had been committed.  We saw many of examples of the “tap-and-go" after a foul was committed, both teams policed the “three players in each half” rule well, and we were thankfully free of any grief from the sidelines directed towards the officials. The scoring came in bursts for each team, with Glenbower getting two quick-fire goals from Fionn Murphy mid way through the first half, courtesy of assists from Colm Leahy and Dylan McCarthy, which pushed us into a 2-03 to 0-01 lead. However, Youghal dominated the second quarter and two quick goals in the final minutes of the half pushed them into a 2-06 to 2-04 lead at half time, a lead which would have been greater only for the excellent saves made by cúl báire Fionn Brennan.

The second half was scoreless for the first ten minutes before Darragh O’Brien’s two frees levelled the match. Another 8 minutes failed to change the scoreboard before Conor Burns and David Buckley pushed us into a two point lead after 51 minutes – 2-08 to 2-06. Fionn Murphy’s third goal on 57 minutes (Colm Leahy and Conor Burns again heavily involved) seemed to seal the deal, but Youghal replied with a point and a goal, leaving just the minimum between the teams as the clock went into red. Two late blocks by Harry Connon and Jack Coleman stemmed the tide, and our players and mentors (well done Brendan, Colin and Denis) relieved when Shane’s final whistle blew. Next up is Glenville in the semi-final. We can’t wait!

Team: Fionn Brennan, Oran Cunningham, Conor Meade, Harry Connon, Jack Coleman, Ben Budds (Captain), Conor Burns, Cormac Delaney, Ben Fogarty, Dylan McCarthy, Colm Leahy, David Buckley, Cathal Brennan, Fionn Murphy, Diarmuid Buckley, Darragh O’Brien, Andrew Brenner.
