Dr Harty Cup Semi Final in Castlelyons - thanks to our Stewards.

We are beginning to get some games because of our recent developments and new pitch.  We hosted a prestigious Dr Harty Cup semi-final last Wednesday.  Thurles CBS played De La Salle, Waterford and finished strong to win 0-28 to 3-12.  Thurles now play St Flannans, Ennis in the final on Saturday 1st February at 1pm in Mallow.  Johnny Murphy referee of last year’s greatest ever senior All Ireland Final hurling final is on the whistle.  Attendance is by ticket only event and they can be bought online on the Munster Council GAA website.

Thurles CBS have won the Dr Harty Cup, on eight previous occasions most recently in 2015 and were on the losing side in 11 finals.  St Flannans have an impressive 22 wins to their credit and were runners up 18 times.  These teams were in the same group this year and drew their game so Saturday’s final in Mallow should be a cracker.  This is a most prestigious Cup and competition and dates back to 1917 when a meeting of Munster schools and colleges agreed to the establishment of a Munster competition with J.M. Harty, Archbishop of Cashel and Emily donating a Cup and it’s on the go since 1918.

Thanks to our Stewards who assisted in good numbers despite a weekday game, the ladies in the shop, the Garda for their great work on the day an Liam O’Neill who prepared the pitch. Thanks also to the supporters of both Schools who were so good mannered, sporting and a credit to their teachers.

Cork lay down a marker.

Cork senior hurlers travelled to Wexford for their first Allianz League game and on an evening certainly not suitable for strawberry picking they easily overcame a weakened home side.  Wexford have a very high number of injuries and retirements this year.  The final score was Cork 2-21 and Wexford 0-12.  Great to see our own Niall O’Leary in action and he played out a solid full game.  Their next outing is in the Páirc versus Limerick, and this should be a cracker as Limerick will be trying to put their stamp on the new year and the Rebels with a full squad are going all out to win the League this year.

The Cork footballers fielded a new look side for their Allianz League game versus Meath in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday evening. There was about fourteen players off the panel since last year either through retirement or injury and this put the management under fair pressure.  Then add in the new rules.  However, Cork adopted to all and gave a spirited display to defeat Meath on a score 2-19 to 0-21.  Early days but good progress.

Award Winner – Alan Fenton.

Our intermediate hurlers may have come up short in a historic bid for All Ireland glory in the final in Croke Park versus Thomastown in January 2024.  However, winning the Munster title in 2023 and getting to the final was a major achievement.  This was acknowledged by the Cork 96FM & C103 Sport Star of the Month Award for January 2024. Our outstanding forward throughout the campaign Alan Fenton was a joint winner with Sean O’Donoghue of St Catherines. St Catherines were defeated in the Junior final the same day.  Alan will now be a special guest at the 21st Annual GAA Sports Star Awards on Friday night in Rochestown Park Hotel.  Congrats Alan and with the team now competing well at Senior A level and back in training best wishes for 2025.

SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh – Winner of the National Pitch of the Year competition, 2024.

Cork GAA’s SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh has been announced as the winner of the prestigious GAA Pitch of the Year award. Congratulations to Colm Daly, the Groundsman on all his great work as the Páirc was in outstanding condition all the year. The other finalists were Dr Hyde Park in Roscommon, St. Tiernach’s in Clones and Páirc Tailteann in Navan. The four finalists shortlisted in the 2024 Pitch of the Year were all visited by Seán Foran (Grounds Management, Croke Park) and Ian McClements (iTurf Management).

Stuart Wilson chairman of the National Pitch Workgroup outlined that all the grounds were assessed against more than 30 criteria including pitch playing quality, pitch presentation and performance as well as taking account of the resources available for management.  He outlined that the extreme weather conditions and very high usage levels made the preparation of pitches extremely challenging and the condition that these finalists achieved at the time of our visit highlighted the level of dedication and commitment of both the staff and volunteers involved.
