Castlemartyr Notes (26th Jan)
Membership Bundles
It's that time of year when the club will be looking for your support with our Membership Bundles. Gold , silver and bronze packages are available and we hope that all regulars and many new people can join us to help the club keep moving forward with our ambitious plans.
Alot of progress has been evident over the last few years, including the addition of the splendid new Astro Turf pitch, which is a huge asset to all strands at Castlemartyr. Whilst we achieved a number of our initial targets in terms of upgrades, there is much more to do, and we really do need everyone playing their part.
Full details of this year's packages will be announced later this week.
Congratulations Martin
A big word of congratulations again to our own clubman Martin O'Brien who was recently named as winner of the Rebel Og Hall Of Fame Award, in recognition of his wonderful work for under age GAA. Martin , was honoured in the company of Erin's Own clubman Eoghan O'Connor at a gala function at Silver Springs Hotel. In introducing Martin as award winner, Michael Evans, Chairman of the judging panel said: “He is one of those people who never looks for the limelight, he just works away behind the scenes with no drama.“After his playing career with Castlemartyr, it is notable he began his administrative career as his club’s minor secretary, highlighting the commitment both men have to promoting our games among young people.“He was a county junior selector in 1994 and an Imokilly football selector in 1995. Martin was PRO for the County Minor Board from 1997 until the formation of Rebel Óg and his commitment continued in the treasurer and assistant treasurer roles. Both of tonight’s Hall of Fame recipients have collectively given more than 100 years of voluntary service to their clubs and county and we thank them and salute them for their magnificent service,” concluded Mr Evans. -
Well done Martin from al at Castlemartyr GAA.

Under 21 Football
The under 21 footballers were due to play the club's first match of the new year on Sunday, but the proposed challenge game against St Catherine's was postponed due to weather conditions. It is hoped that this game will now go ahead this coming Friday. A special welcome is extended to the 8 new players who have joined the under 21 set up from minor ranks this season - Robbie Kelly, Jack O'Neill, Jack Clifford, Finn Ansbro, Rory Lynch, Conor Flaherty Tommy Casey and Finn Connaughton. We are delighted to see these new recruits in red and look forward to seeing you all being part of the club for many years.
The under 21 B championship is very competitive, with no 'A' grade equivalent and Castlemartyr are drawn to play the winners of the Aghada/Glenville match. They are due to meet in Rostellan on Sunday week.
East Cork Leagues
Football will be first up with the first round of fixtures due on Sunday, February 16th. Castlemartyr are again in division 1 and face games against Carraig na bhFear, Carrigtwohill, Lisgoold, Erin's Own, Midleton, Youighal and Fr O'Neill's. In championship action, our defence of the Jim Ryan Cup will begin in mid summer - as per last year there will be three groups of four in the round robin series, with last year's B grade winners Glenbower Rovers coming into the picture.
Castlemartyr will also field a second team in football championship later in the summer in 'C garde. In total ten teams have entered this competition.
Meantime the domestic hurling leagues begin on February 23rd . Our division 1 opposition will come from Carraig na bhFear, Cobh, Carrigtwohill, Cloyne, Midleton , Bride Rovers and Sarsfield's, so lots of matches on the agenda over the next few months. Later in the year, the juniors will play in the 'B garde championship, which will initially ensure 3 group games.
News of the opening series of league fixtures in both codes is expected in the near future.
Allianz Leagues
Both Cork teams got off to a winning start on Saturday evening, with the hurlers easing past Wexford, who were minus several regulars. There was a very positive reaction to the new rules changes in football, with most matches across the weekend seeing a significant degree of scoreboard activity.
Limerick are in town this Saturday for a high profile hurling match, whilst the footballers travel north to Down on Sunday afternoon.
Colleges Action
It remains to be seen whether or not Ciarán will be involved with Cork in that Limerick game- before that a high profile MTU v UCC Fitzgibbon clash will occupy the minds of many of the Cork panel on Wednesday evening. Best wishes are extended to our club members currently involved in college action at various levels.
Wednesday Walking
Meantime, also on Wednesday, our weekly walks continue from 7pm to 8pm - all welcomed to join us for week 3 of 5.
