Castlelyons Notes (13th Jan)

  • Jan 13,2025

Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 13.1.25.

Congratulations to Watergrasshill.

The buzz around Croke Park and across the road in the Hotel for the club finals was electric on Sunday last.  It was like last January 2024 when St Catherines and Castlelyons were playing in the same finals.  The trip to Croke Park for any club in a final is more than a day out as the club and community have really hit the big time.  Families from the clubs can travel without any wrangling for tickets like the big games.  Then again, these games are the biggest to the community as together they shout on their own club heroes. Write it down there was some crowd from East Cork there last Sunday.

Commiserations to Russell Rovers after Sunday’s junior final. They suffered a four-point defeat to St Lachtain’s of Kilkenny which was so disappointing for them as they fell to a Kilkenny five years ago in the final too. They battled all the way and were just three points behind with over a minute to go but it was not to be. However, they can be proud of their great effort.

There was a serious build up to the to the second most important club competition in hurling, the All-Ireland Intermediate club final.  Russell Rovers supporters stayed on and Watergrasshill supporters were getting into voice.  The ’Hill went very well in the first half and were four up at half time.  However, Tynagh Abbey Duniry really hurled in the second half, and particularly Shane Maloney.  Maloney came on in an All-Ireland minor final at 16 years of age and scored four points in a win over Tipperary and now a wily character began to make the scoreboard tick. The Galway side were one point in front at the 60-minute mark and in the five minutes added time there was some excitement as scores were exchanged and looked to be heading for extra time.  Suddenly the sliotar fell favourably for captain Seán Desmond. He found himself one-on-one with the goalie and banged in a cracker of a winner. So, it was the top for the ‘Hill, with their team and supporters immortalised in Croke Park Captain Sean Desmond strode up the Hogan Stand to hoist the coveted silverware in the air and gave a great speech.  Fair play a massive team display and great supporters. Comhghairdeachas go léir.
