The weekly Club Lotto is now in it’s 29th year. The very first Draw was held on Tuesday 5th of March 1996 in The Rathcormac Inn – the rota was Rathcormac Inn, O Doherty’s, Denis Barry’s Vera Barry’s and O Driscoll’s -a lot’s changed since. Despite the changes the Lotto continues to be hugely important source of revenue for the Club. The major re-vamp a few years go and the advent of online ticket purchasing, and Yearly Ticket sales means Bride Rovers GAA Club Lotto tickets can be purchased anywhere in the world. The €2 tickets can still also be bought from Club members and in local business outlets -if you’re not in you can’t win!
Congratulations.
After an epic game in Croke Park Sunday, Watergrasshill were crowned All Ireland Intermediate Champions, defeating Tynagh-Abbey- Duniry, following in the footsteps of Blarney, Ballymartle, and Kanturk. Fifty seconds left on the clock of the allowed five minutes of Injury time, Captain Sean Desmond pounced for the winner, to set off wild celebrations that will be remembered for ever. Winning Cork County and Munster championships, and promotion to Senior A for 2025 it capped a memorable year, on this the 50th Anniversary of their County winning Junior success of 1974.
Commiserations to Russell Rovers who suffered defeat for the second time in an All-Ireland Final where St; Lachtains from Kilkenny were always marginally better in this contest. Still a great year for the Rovers as they have a County and Munster and are promoted to the Intermediate grade for 2025.
BEST OF LUCK SARS.
We send the very best wishes to Sarsfields Senior Hurlers as they travel to Croke park on Sunday next. Sars will meet Na Fianna in the All-Ireland Senior Club Championship Final. Newtownshandrum, in 2005, were the last Cork Club to bring the Tommy Moore Cup back to Leeside so hopefully Sars can bridge that long gap and win the Title in GAA HQ on Sunday afternoon
OUR FINEST HOUR’.
Having read Edwin McGreal’s book ‘Our Finest Hour’ during the Christmas Season I got thinking about great games we played in -we won some and lost some but what was ‘our’ greatest hour? After an admittedly unscientific text Opinion Poll to which I got a great response the County Intermediate Championship Final of 2003 came out on top -by a whisker. Everyone has a personal opinion and in truth from the start of the 1997 season we have had so many great hours -indeed days and great seasons: Contesting 2 East Cork Junior A Hurling Finals and 6 Junior A Football Finals, winning the Co JHC and Co IHC in 1998 & 2003, contesting the Senior County Final in 2008. Winning the Co Intermediate league and the first Official ‘Munster Club Intermediate Championship’ of 2003, reaching 2 County Senior Hurling League Finals, winning East Cork Junior B and Junior C Hurling Championships, winning the Cork under 20 Hurling Final -all brilliant occasions and brilliant games to be involved with. Winning the Junior County Final in 1998 was very special as it was our first ever Adult County Title. Then for players who played during the 1960’s when we restarted as a B grade hurling team reaching the Senior Final was truly an ‘impossible dream’. 2003 was such a brilliant season starting with Jack Russell coming in as team trainer. Winning the Midleton Gaelic Week Tournament, then the County Championship and Intermediate League and then the Inaugural Munster Club Intermediate Championship Final. Defeating Blarney, Inniscarra, Aghabullogue and Kilruane McDonagh’s in four Finals in the one season was unprecedented and reflected a truly brilliant year. Bride Rovers had reached the 1933 County Intermediate Championship final, losing out to Lough Rovers, so to win the Championship 70 years later and move up to the Senior Grade was amazing.
