Fixtures.
At this time of year fixtures are far and few between. Rebel Óg are presently taking the entries, then gradings. Then they will set out the competitions and draws. This is a major piece of work but is done well and usually out end of January or early February. In the Red FM senior hurling league, we are drawn in Division Three and play the following teams Ballinhassig, Blackrock, Blarney, Bride Rovers, Courcey Rovers, Lisgoold, Mallow, Newcestown, and Russell Rovers. These games commence on Sunday 9th of March and are scheduled for 11.30am each Sunday morning but can be changed by mutual arrangement. There are three other East Cork teams and a lot of good teams that we have previously met in championships so all the games should be interesting. Fixtures for East Cork Under 21 and football will be determined shortly.
New Cork Hurling Captain for 2025.
Robert Downey from Glen Rovers is the new captain of Cork Senior hurlers for 2025 and Shane Barrett of Blarney is the new vice-captain. Downey a former past pupil of CBC Cork and an underage player up along with the Rebels really hit the bigtime in the final against Clare last year. In the All-Ireland final, he caught the sliotar over Clare’s Peter Duggan, not an easy task, took off on an 80-yard solo run and banged in an unstoppable goal to put Cork 1-7 to 0-3 up in the eleventh minute. It was one of the best goals ever seen in Croke Park. Standing at 6ft 5ins he has the power and all the skills and should be some leader for the Rebels in 2025.
Munster Council Grants - 2024.
The Munster Council in conjunction with Central Council distributed a fund over €1.3M for Club Development Grants, covering capital grant works in Munster clubs for 2024. There was a total expenditure of €10M recorded by clubs across the province and 96 applications were submitted for consideration.
The Council agreed a budget of €1,362,520 for the grant scheme. €1,000,500 was donated by Central Council and the remaining €362,020 was contributed by the Munster Council. The grants paid were for land purchase, dressing room and gym developments, refurbishment of handball courts and pitch development, floodlighting & hurling wall developments. No doubt about it many clubs continue to improve facilities for their players and supporters alike. Castlelyons have recently constructed a new 300 Stand and a newly tarmacadamed roadway from the Community Centre up to the new pitch during and there are plans for further development. Hopefully we will be considered for a category grant in 2025 as all this work is so costly.
