Glenville Notes (6th Jan)
Successful Glenville Sevens
Glenville GAA held an afternoon Christmas 7s fun tournament on Saturday, Dec 28th. It was a great occasion to burn off the excessive turkey and ham and chocolate calories with the proceedings of the day going to Penny Dinners.
Six teams of mixed gender and ability took part, with each team names after a townland in the parish. Participants included Paudie Cahill, Donnacha Forde, Shane Forde, Aaron Collins, Dlyan McCarthy, Shayne Curtin, Shannon O’Mahony, Ella Ryan, Shelly Sheehan, Diarmuid McCarthy, Sam Bracken, Conor Gowen, Donal Sheehan, Cathal Sheehan, Colin O’Keeffe, Hannah O’Leary, Lucy Ryan. Tom Dinan, Cathal Fitzgerald, Ciaran Linehan, Adam Hennessy, Conor McHugh, Conor O’Mahony, Josh Cooke, Keela Enright, Holly O’Mahony. Josh O’Brien, Sean O’Leary, Cian O’Callaghan, Alan Busteed, Pearse Moloney, Seamie Curtin, Colm O’Regan, Paddy O’Sullivan, Mike O’Riordan, Hollie O’Brien, Edel Murphy, Andrew Desmond, Calum O’Mahony, Liam Keane, Billy Ryan, Stephen Ryan, Arlene Fouhy and Fionn Fitzgerald.
The tournament consisted of two groups of three teams, with each team playing two games. The winners of each group went straight to the final, second placed played in the Shield final and third placed teams played for the wooden spoon.
The games were highly entertaining, played with intensity and good humour. The winning team of the tournament consisted of Andrew Desmond, Calum O’Mahony, Liam Keane, Billy Ryan, Stephen Ryan, Arlene Fouhy and Fionn Fitzgerald.
Individual highly sought-after awards were presented to some players that showed exceptional talent, participation, and effort over the afternoon. The Golden Boot Award was presented to Shelly Sheehan who was simply outstanding over the tournament, kicking goals and points with incredible accuracy and scoring more than double the number of goals of her nearest rival.
The Golden Gloves Award was won by the ever-popular Cian O’Callaghan, who gave a great display pulling off some exceptional saves as well as giving an excellent performance out field for some of the games.
The Player of the Tournament was decided by a popular vote of the four teams not contesting the final and this was won by Arlene Fouhy, who was most competitive, fast, great mover of the ball and a good shot finisher showing outstanding skill and movement and was instrumental in helping her team to win the overall tournament.
Special thanks to Johnny O’Connell and Dave Cooke for refereeing all the games. Feedback from the participants was positive and it is hoped that this will become an annual event that will grow in popularity.
