Midleton Notes (5th Dec)
home / Midleton Notes (5th Dec)
THANK YOU
After three years looking after the club’s notes and social media and other PRO duties the time has come for me to step aside and give someone else a turn and these will be my last notes ahead of Monday night's AGM.
This is a busy but rewarding role and I wish my successor the very best in the position.
There’s no way I could have done what I’ve done over the past three years without a huge amount of help and support. For the most part all I was doing is taking contributions from a massive amount of people, who took time out of their busy schedules to help me, and putting them together for the club notes or putting them on social media.
At the risk of leaving somebody out, and I apologise in advance if I do, I feel it would be remiss of me not to thank the following people.
Ladies Football PRO Tracy Saunderson, camogie club PROs, Sinead Garde first and Deirdre Hanrahan in recent years.
Juvenile coaches: Ed Cronin, Aidan O’Donovan, Liam Walsh, Bernard Butler, Shae O’Dowd, Michael Carroll (and also as Juvenile chairman and David Cody too as juvenile secretary), Kevin McSweeney, Martin McSweeney, Mike Oosthuizhen.
Adult mentors: Micheál Keohane, Keith Ryan, Brian McCarthy, Davy O’Brien, Pat Walsh, Jerome Curtin and Eoin Ferritter.
Mary and Coleman Quinn for the club shop news and for their help with scores of matches.
Mairead Beausang for her Healthy Club and Monday Club notes.
Marion Ryan for her bingo and social dancing notes.
John Fenton for his RIP.ie notices, Green Club and everything else.
Pat O’Brien for keeping me in touch with happenings in the pavilion.
Coleman Quirke for facilities news, old pictures etc.
Gillian Murphy for the Magpies All Stars updates.
Liam Wade for County Board news and so on.
Lynda Lawton for the Canva lessons and so much more.
Alan Stanton, my overseas correspondent.
Diarmuid Geary, Michael Walsh and all my turning Midleton Black and White team.
John Cashman of Midleton News and C103 and all the other media outlets for their coverage of our club.
Also thank you to Andrew Foley, Denis O’Flynn, Declan Barron, Alan Donegan, Paul Stack, George Hatchell and anyone else who supplied me with pictures during the last three years.
Thanks for reading my notes and for interacting over the years.
Thanks, Ger Lawton.
CORK COUNTY U-21 AHC SEMI-FINAL
MIDLETON 3-18 NEWCESTOWN 1-10

Our U-21 A hurlers travelled to the 4G pitch in Pairc Uí Chaoimh to take on Carbery champions Newcestown on Sunday in the county semi-final in front of a fine crowd.
We got off to a good start with two Mikey Finn frees and an Eoghan Fraser point from play giving us a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after eight minutes.
Swapped frees followed before Newcestown cut the gap to two and then we hit three points on the bounce through Peter Barrett (2) and Alex Quirke to see us lead by five (0-7 to 0-2) after 16 minutes.
Swapped points from two Newcestown frees and points for us from Alex Moloney and Mikey Finn saw us lead by five still with six first-half minutes to play.
But again we struck the next three white flags through Dara Scanlon, Alex Quirke and Mikey Finn to give us an eight point lead going into stoppage time before a Newcestown free and a Mikey Finn free saw us finish the opening half with an eight point lead, 0-13 to 0-5.
We stretched our lead to nine just 74 seconds into the second period through Mikey Finn from play but then the game changed as Newcestown roared into it and hit 1-5 on the trot while we didn't score for 17 minutes as the West Cork men dragged the deficit down to a single point (0-14 to 1-10) but amazingly that was to be their final score of the game.
Under the cosh our lads dug in and really stood up to the challenge to power clear in the closing stages and book their place in the county final. Two Mikey Finn frees stretched our lead to three before Davy Cremin struck for our opening goal with less that three minutes to play to double our lead to six.
Cian Stack added a point soon after before Peter Barrett and Alex Quirke added a goal each inside two minutes before Conor Morley finished the scoring with a white flag to give us a 14 point winnig margin which nobody would have predicted with 14 minutes to play but that's hurling for you. On now to the County Final....see below for full details.
Scorers: Mikey Finn (0-9, 0-8 frees), Alex Quirke and Peter Barrett (1-2 each), Davy Cremin (1-0) Alex Moloney, Eoghan Fraser, Dara Scanlon, Cian Stack and Conor Morley (0-1 each).
MIDLETON: Bríon Saunderson; Thomas Dunlea, Adam Fay, Carthraigh Cronin; Alex Moloney, Ciarmhac Smyth, Evan McCarthy; Eoghan Fraser, Evan McGrath; Darragh McCarthy, Alex Quirke (Captain), Davy Cremin; Mikey Finn, Dara Scanlon, Peter Barrett. Subs used: Cian Stack for D Scanlon (half-time), Conor Morley for D McCarthy (54), Cathal Beausang for D Cremin (59), Tadhg O’Leary Hayes for E McGrath (62).
COUNTY FINAL
Our win over Newcestwown means that we will now face St. Finbarrs (who beat Shandrum in the other semi-final) on this Friday night in Pairc Uí Rinn at 7.30pm in the County Final. Best of luck to all the players and management and please support the lads if you can.
Remember you need to get your tickets in advance at: https://gaacork.ie/tickets/
Also on Sunday last Bride Rovers beat Erins Own in their replay of the other East Cork semi-final, which means that we will now play them in the East Cork Final, regardless of Friday night's result, most probably on the weekend after next.

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY
Waterford and Cork will play a Senior Hurling Challenge at Fraher Field on Saturday, January 4 in aid of former Déise hurler Brian Greene and Waterford Hospice.
Brian was diagnosed with cancer in May, 2022 and is currently undergoing treatment. The match was launched at The Park Hotel in Dungarvan last week. Tickets will be priced at €10. Throw in is at 5pm.
Greene achieved Munster glory with both Waterford and Mount Sion in 2002. The number seven fell to his knees at the final whistle when the Déise won their first provincial title in 39 years against Tipperary at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Former Déise and Lismore forward Seán Daly has been one of the driving forces behind this event. “The GAA is a family organisation. When your family are in trouble, people rally around. For me, it’s supporting a friend. Plain and simple. No more than anybody else in the room here, we’re supporting somebody that wants our help right now. Let’s drive it on and make it a good night.”
Déise chairman Sean Michael O’Regan recalled Greene’s part in the 2002 Munster breakthrough. “The picture of Brian at the end of the game, that’s the way everybody was in the stands. The raw emotion that day after so many defeats, after so many years. To win a Munster final was huge and to have the Greene name associated with that was only fitting and proper.”
Current Waterford coach Dan Shanahan often marked the Mount Sion man in training. “If you got the better of Brian Greene, you were having a good night! I’m honoured to be here for such a good cause.” Players Austin Gleeson, PJ Fanning and Kieran Bennett as well as team secretary Ger Harris were also in attendance.
Cork coach and Cappoquin native Donal O’Rourke said that the Rebel players and management are happy to lend their support. “Whatever has to be done, we’ll do it. What Brian has, unfortunately has been under every roof in Ireland and has touched every family in Ireland.” Brendan Coleman, Ciarán Joyce, Niall O Leary and Ger Mellerick also represented Cork on the night of the launch.
