Heartbreak for Minors in East Cork final

Our U18s suffered a heartbreaking defeat last Friday night in Caherlag in the East Cork final, Cobh being the victors on the night. We had fallen at the same stage in the same location last year, so the team were not short of motivation on the night, but alas it wasn’t to be. It was a fine night for football, although it was one of the colder nights we have seen this year, and the evening dew made handling difficult for both teams. Cobh were first out of the blocks with two points inside the first two minutes, but we got back on level terms through a pointed free from Ciaran and a fine point from Ryan from a tight angle. Cobh then stuck a goal after a high ball into their full forward, and it was relatively level pegging after that as we kept them in sight, with pointed frees from Mike and Ciaran, a rocket of a shot from David that just cleared the crossbar and a point off his left for Shayne bringing us to half time four points behind on a score-line of 0-6 to 1-7. On the restart we had a point from David in the 35th minute and one from Ciaran in the 41st before Cobh struck three points on the bounce in the 49th, 51st and 53rd minutes to stretch their lead to five. In a grandstand finish we scored three points to reduce the deficit to just two with a minute left on the official clock, with Ciaran and Shayne knocking scores over, but two last minute attacks were to no avail as Cobh held out to scenes of despair on the Glenville side as the full-time whistle blew. In truth, we were desperately unlucky, Ciaran and Ryan both hitting the underside of the crossbar in the second half with the rebound efforts being cleared off the line on both occasions and two further efforts from David and Jack drawing exceptional saves from the Cobh net minder. Sport is cruel though and the margins between winning and losing are very thin. It was especially tough for this group of players after losing the East Cork final last year and losing in the East Cork hurling final a month ago, with a number of the panel also on the team that narrowly lost to Aghada in this season’s East Cork U21 A football final. That said, they have been playing well to get themselves into finals, and it can be only a matter of time before the wins start to come. It was the last occasion for a number of this team playing in the minor ranks, and we wish Cathal, Ciaran, Conor, Coran, Darragh, Donnacha, Fionn, and Ryan the very best of luck in the future – they have been playing together with over a decade and have been fantastic ambassadors for both Glenville and Watergrasshill clubs, hopefully they will have better days in the jersey than this one. Cobh now go on to represent East Cork in the county semi-final against the winners of the West division, we wish them the very best of luck.

Dads and Lads football blitz
On Sunday we held a blitz with six teams from St. Catherines, Russell Rovers, Na Laochra Aeracha, and Glenville.
Na Laocha Aeracha are Munsters first LGBTQ+ Inclusive Gaelic Football club and were formed this year. We were delighted that they chose our event to take part in their first ever blitz. It should be the first of many and they will go from strength to strength based on their fine performances.
An enjoyable morning was had by all with some fantastic football on display and great entertainment for the spectators.
Many thanks to the clubs for participating and making it a great occasion.
Afterwards the teams were treated to some well-earned refreshments where stories of past glories were told. Some may have even been true!
We look forward to hosting a similar event in the future.
