TWO COUNTY HURLING SEMI-FINALS

We face into a huge weekend of hurling for our club with our adult teams involved in two County Hurling Championship Semi-Finals.

First up, on Saturday, in Cobh at 4pm our intermediates will take on East Cork neighbours, Erins Own, as they bid to make it to back-to-back County Finals. Best of luck to manager Keith Ryan, his selectors Barry Fitzgerald, Ian Kennefick and Padraig O'Keeffe and all the players and backroom team.

Then on Sunday, our senior hurlers take on Sarsfields, in a repeat of last year's county final, in the second of this year's Premier Senior Hurling Championship semi-finals in Pairc Uí Chaoimh at 4pm. Blackrock and Imokilly meet in the first semi-final at 2pm.

Best of luck to Micheál Keohane, Padraig O'Shea and Alywin Kearney, all the players and backroom team.

Remember you must purchase your tickets for both these games in advance at https://gaacork.ie/tickets/

U-16s are free and don't need a ticket.

EAST CORK JAFC SEMI-FINAL

MIDLETON 1-9 CASTLEMARTYR 4-9

The Midleton Junior A Football panel that took on Castlemartyr last Saturday in Cloyne. Photos: Denis O'Flynn.

Our Junior A footballers travelled to Cloyne on Saturday evening last to take on Castlemartyr in the semi-finals.

Amazingly this game was played ten weeks and a day after this team's last championship game and a week before the club's county Intermediate A and Premier Senior hurling championship semi-finals.....

That said, the lads put up an excellent display against a full strength Castlemartyr side who were helped by their hurlers being out of the championship with a number of weeks.

Midleton captain Cathal Gunning with Castlemartyr captain Conor Whyte and referee Eoin Coleman.

We got off to a fine start with two excellent points from play from Sean McSharry but Castlemartyr hit back with goals in the eight and eleventh minutes to lead by 2-0 to 0-2 after 13 minutes play.

Sean McSharry and Kieran Denihan hit points fror Midleton to cut the gap to two before Castlemartyr scored their first point from play in the 21st minute and hit another soon ater to lead by four after 25 minutes.

Christian Daly scored soon after before Castlemartyr hit two in a row and then received a black card.

Evan McGrath got a goal for Midleton in first-half stoppage time before Gavin Bagnell finished the first-half socring with a white flag to leave the midway score reading 2-4 to 1-6 in favour of the men in red.

Midleton's Gavin Bagnell taking on the Castlemartyr defence in Cloyne.

Two Castlemartyr points followed by points from Sean McSharry and Kieran Denihan meant that there was still just a point between the teams with 14 minutes to play.

Castlemartyr stretched their lead to two soon after before they struck for a crucial third goal with eight minutes to play to stretch their lead to five.

The Magpies never gave up but found scores hard to come by and a goal and a point in injury-time gave Castlemartyr a flattering nine point winning margin.

JUNIORS

PREMIER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

MIDLETON 1-8 MILFORD 2-13

Unfortunately our Premier Junior team bowed out of the Championship against a very strong Milford team last Saturday in Ballygiblin.

After a slow start where we trailed three points to one but we got to grips with the game to lead four points to three coming up to half-time.

Rachel Ryan from frees (0-3F) and a great score from play by Abbie Foley. With the scores level at five each we were very unfortunate to have a player dismissed for what was deemed "dangerous play" by the referee on the advice of his umpire.

We trailed  by a point at half-time and try as we might in the second-half, we could not overcome the loss of a player.

Milford's experience began to tell  and in the end they ran out deserving winners. All in all a fabulous effort by our girls to reach a semi-final in their first year at this grade and we were beaten only by a combination of a very experienced Milford team and at best a dubious refereeing decision.

No doubt this group will continue to improve and will come back stronger in 2025.

MIDLETON PANEL: Jill Connaughton, Leah Hogan, Megan Kelly, Kate Saunderson, Molly Beausang, Laura Goulding, Sorcha Cronin, Lucy Wallace, Yvonne Abernethy, Abbie Foley(0-1), Roisin McManus (1-1), Sadhbh Beausang, Kate O'Sullivan (0-2), Jodie Keegan O'Connell, Rachel Ryan (0-4,3fs), Kate Griffin, Meghan Wallace, Roisin O'Callaghan, Rayanna Power, Beth Ryan, Caoimhe Cronin, Muireann Ni Conchubhair, Elle McManus, Aoife Fitzgerald and Kelly Quirke.

Our U13 girls finished their round robin leagues games with a win over Inch Rovers on Monday last. A great game by both team with Midleton narrowly winning by a point. Final score Midleton 4-4 Inch Rovers 4-3.
