Blockbuster Weekend for Castlelyons

Excitement is building for this weekend as we approach the business end of the hurling season. First up is our Senior hurlers as they take on the famed Glen Rovers in the Senior A Semi-final in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday at 5.45pm. 2024 has been a great year for our club with a historic All-Ireland final in January and now we are making in-roads in our first year promoted. Wins against Fermoy and Cloyne and a loss to Bride Rovers left us in a quarter final against Na Piarsaigh. This game was a marathon affair with the team eventually winning on penalties after the teams were left level 2-23 to 2-26 even when extra-time was up. We understand the challenge that lies before us now and the focus is clear.  Glen Rovers were surprisingly relegated from the Premier grade last year and with a star-studded team it is no surprise they are one of the favourites to win out the championship. There’s nowhere else you would want to be but playing big matches in the Park in October and Castlelyons have played their fair share of crunch games over the last 18 months. Next up is our Junior B hurlers who take on Fr. O’Neill’s in the East Cork final on Sunday at 11.00 am in Caherlag. Training with the seniors all year and being in a high achieving atmosphere has given our 2nd team great confidence, where they have played some brilliant hurling in their march to the final. A win against St. Catherines, a bye against Carrigtwohill and a loss against Erin’s Own was good enough to reach the quarter final against Killeagh. The lads put on their best performance of the year to defeat last year’s champions in a cracking game and set up a semi-final against Watergrasshill. This game, like the Senior game the night before went to extra-time and again it was the men in green and yellow that prevailed triumphant, winning on a scoreline of 0-19 to 0-17. We now go in search of our first win at this grade since the historic win of 1991. With more than one family connection from that success to this team in the present day we hope we can make history again. We want to wish both sets of players and mentors the very best of luck over the weekend. Castlelyons Abú!!

Castlelyons Remembers James Maye

There was a special commemorative evening in Castlelyons on Thursday 26.9.24. It was the 125th Anniversary of the death of a remarkable Irishman James Maye, Farran, Castlelyons. There was Mass in St Nicholas’s Church celebrated by Fr Coleman. Then a wreath was laid by the Plaque in Castlelyons Village in memory of James Maye. John Arnold, Bartlemy, gave a most interesting talk/oration on the life and times of this remarkable man. James Maye was a member of the Land League and played a leading role during the land agitation at the time and caring for the poor. All members of the Maye family and relatives were in attendance. Later in the Community Centre after refreshments both young James Maye spoke on behalf of the Maye family and thanked all involved in the commemoration most especially John Arnold. James Ronayne was also a member the three person committee. Then John Arnold launched a most informative and well presented booklet and true to his word there was on for all in the audience. Members of Castlelyons GAA Club attended.
