50th Anniversary Celebrations

1974 saw Watergrasshill Hurling club win the East Cork and Cork County Junior Championships for the first time in our history. We defeated Cloyne in the East Cork final 3-08 to 1-08, having beaten reigning champions and favorites to retain their crown Erin’s Own in the East Cork semi-final 3-06 to 2-08.

The adventure towards county honours involved winning against Delaney’s (4-06 to 2-10) & Aghabullogue (3-05 to 1-10) to set up a Junior A county final against Charleville on Sunday November 3rd in Castletownroche. The hill were triumphant on the day 3-08 to 0-10 in front of 5,000 people and after the game “There was enthusiasm, there was laughter and there were tears as stony men reveled in the emotion that gripped them”. Jack Barrett, Chairman of the Cork county Board, presented the cup to Watergrasshill Captain, Ger O’Herlihy and for men like Jack Barry, Jim Sarsfield, Frant Halbert, Eamy O’Shea, Felix Sarsfield and many others, this was a moment and a game that will long be savored.

Dedication, spirit, will to win and great teamwork won us our greatest prize. You don’t know how I feel” said a delighted Feliw Sarsfield. “Being a delegate to the County Board and knowing I can walk in there and tell them we are Champions.”.

The victory dance was held in Blarney, where over 400 people saw Jack Barrett present East Cork and Cork county medals to the victorious team.

A trip to London was organized for St. Patrick’s weekend 1975, which included a game against Fr. Murphy’s, a tour of London and a meal in the Fr. Murphy’s clubhouse before returning to Cork on Monday evening.

On Saturday 14th September, this historic band of brothers held a re-union in the Clayton Hotel, Sliversprings to mark the 50th Anniversary of that great county winning team. It was fantastic to see so many of the team re-united and there were stories, tales and reminiscing of days and times gone by. There were also memories shared of clubmates who were no longer with us such as Eamonn Ryan and Timmy O’Riordan. Although 50 years ago, memories of their achievements were shared as if it were just yesterday and the legacy of this team’s achievements live on to this day through the success of Gaelic games in the parish and the thriving juvenile and adult teams across both codes.

We were delighted to share that special occasion with them and wish them every health and happiness in the years to come and thank them for their contributions to Gaelic Games I the parish of Watergrasshill / Glenville.

Under 13’s win plate final

Rebel Óg Coiste, Fé13 Hurling League Plate Final

Watergrasshill 5-08 St. Finbarr’s 5-03

A well earned win for the lads on Sunday evening in Togher. Both teams started brightly and attacked from the off looking for scores and then we conceded a few goals midway through the half but the we  got a goal to keep us in the game to leave the Half time score of 1-03 to 4-02 and a fight on our hands to get back in the game. But fight we did and with Jamie, Max, Paddy Moynihan and captain Diarmuid defending from the front and setting up attacks for our forwards of Ciaran, Fionn, Ely and James O’Mahoney who banged in a few goals to get us right back in the game and then worked hard as a team to see out the game to get the win. Captain Diarmuid accepted the shield on behalf of his team mates and also gave a great speech to go with it. Well done to the boys on ending the year with some silverware after all of their efforts during the year.

Disappointment for Minors and U-16’s

There was disappointment for our Minor and Fé16 hurlers as they both lost out in their respective championship campaigns recently.

Our minors lost out in the East Cork final against Ballygiblin. In a game dominated by the wind, there was nothing in it throughout, but our lads lost out in the end 1-15 to 1-17, with the game tied up until the 25th minute of the second half, a few late scores followed by some all out defense, secured the win for our opponents. The hill battled to the end and we're super proud of this group who gave it their all and had a great run. Well done lads.

Our Fé16 boys lost out in the semi-final of the P2 Championship against Douglas 2-26 to 5-23 after extra-time in Togher under lights. The boys gave absolutely everything they had and showed what brilliant hurlers they are. We are very proud of them and can’t wait to see them on the field of play again in the very near future.
