Glenville Notes (24th Sep)
Premier Juniors qualify for County Quarter Final
Glenville played Kinsale in the rescheduled third round Premier Junior game in Ballygarvan on Saturday and despite narrowly losing by two points, Glenville finished the Group stage in second place and consequently qualified for the Premier Junior County Quarter Final.
The game was rescheduled after the original fixture had to be abandoned when a Glenville player was injured. In the original fixture Glenville were eight points ahead at half-time and five points ahead when the game was abandoned.
The knowledge and insight that Kinsale acquired from the original game gave our opponents an insight into our key scoring players and this combined with the loss of two key players in the Glenville squad for the re-fixture meant that the replay was always going to be a more intense and closer affair.
Cathal Fitzgerald got the first score of the game with a point. This was quickly cancelled out by a Kinsale point in the fifth minute. Glenville scored three points in a row (two excellent Ciaran O’Leary points from play, followed by a Josh Cooke point from a free) to lead by three points before Kinsale scored their second free from a point to reduce the Glenville advantage two points.
Ciaran O’Leary’s excellent form continued, and he score an incredibly well struck goal on the 15th minute. Kinsale then scored three points in a row, bringing the Glenville advantage back to two points. In the next five minutes, Ciaran O’Leary caught two clean long shots and called a mark on both occasions and converted both himself to two points. Kinsale scored three points to bring the Glenville back to the minimum of one point before Ciaran O’Leary scored a point from a difficult angle free to see Glenville lead by two points going into the break 1-7 to 0-8.
The second half was a much more intense game and Kinsale pushed aggressively to gain control of the game. The two-point advantage was eliminated in the first three minutes of the second half. Josh Cooke put Glenville ahead again with a well-struck free on the 33rd minute. For the remainder of the third quarter, Kinsale attacked strongly and were rewarded with three points without reply to lead by two points as we entered the final quarter.
Josh Cooke scored another point on the 46th minute to bring Glenville back to within one point of Kinsale. Kinsale scored a free on the 47th minute and the remaining 15 minutes was an energy sapping period for both teams, with attacks, turnovers, and counterattacks by both teams. Despite heroic efforts by Glenville, they couldn’t close the gap on Kinsale, and the game ended on a scoreline of Glenville 1-9 to Kinsale 0-14.
The narrow loss to Kinsale, combined with the results of other games meant scoring difference in the group came into play and the combined results put Glenville in second place in their Group, which in turn earns them a County Quarter Final game against Kilmurry. This match will take place in Ovens on Friday, September 27th at 7.45 pm.

U14c3 Football League v Nemo Rangers
Glenville travelled to Nemo on Wednesday last for our 3rd game in this league. We had 18 eager lads available and ready to play against a formidable opponent. Despite the pace and fluidity of Nemo our lads battled away for the hour. We came up against a well-oiled machine in Nemo who played the game with high intensity and pace. Credit must go to our lads who kept at it right to the final whistle. These games are of great benefit to our players, and you can see the progress. We have one game left in this league which is against Ballincollig on Monday September 30th in Glenville.
