JUVENILES

DAVY HOGAN STREET LEAGUE FINALS

The annual Street League Hurling finals for the Davy Hogan Cup took last Saturday in Clonmult Memorial Park.

This competition, in memory of former Midleton GAA coach Davy Hogan is running for 36 years now. The boys born in 2013 and 2012 produced some fantastic hurling with some memorable performances and scores over the last two weeks.

With the camogie finals taking place also (See below for more), there were big crowds to see the boys and girls march through the streets of Midleton behind the piper and drummer up to Clonmult Memorial Park.

The boys final was between Sons of Rest and Forkums, with Sons of Rest coming out on top by the narrowest of margins after an epic contest. Well done to all of the 70 boys who competed across the six teams.

Special thanks to this year’s coordinator Aidan O’Donovan and also to Mike Oosthuizen who gave up their time to help out across the last few weeks.

Thanks to our young whistlers, Matthew, Josh, Leah, Conor and Lochlann who did an excellent job refereeing the matches. Thanks to the parents who brought food and those who helped out on the final day.

Final thanks to Andrew Foley who as always captured the action with some fantastic photos – check out more photos from Andrew at:

P1 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL

MIDLETON 0-18 GLEN ROVERS 1-19 (AFTER EXTRA-TIME)

Shane O'Mahony in action against the Glen on Monday night. Photo: Eddie O'Hare/Echo.

Extra-time heartbreak was our lot in the Mardyke on Monday night, as our Fé16s were narrowly edged out by Glen Rovers after a cracking 80 minutes of hurling in front of a big crowd.

The Glen got off to a cracking start with the first four points but points from Shane O'Mahony (2), Alfie Hennessy and Cian Lawton saw us back within one (0-5 to 0-4) ater 20 minutes.

The Glen struck the next three white flags before we finished the first-half scoring through John O'Sullivan and Max Murphy to go in trailing by 0-8 to 0-6 at the break.

By the three quarter-stage we were right back in it as the sides were level at 0-11 each.

As the clock ticked into injury time, Shane O'Mahony's free put us in front, 0-15 to 0-14, before the Glen levelled with the last play of the game to send this absorbing constest to extra-time on a score of 0-15 each.

Points from John O'Sullivan and Cian Lawton had us level again at 0-17 each just before the end of the first period of extra-time before the Glen struck for the crucial only goal of the game which saw them lead by 1-17 to 0-17 with ten minutes to play.

Ciarán Kelly reduced the deficit to two but that was to be our last score and the Glen added the final two points of the tie to win by four.

Hard luck lads but well done on a tremendous effort.

Midleton scorers: Shane O’Mahony 0-8 (0-5 f), Scott Dunlea, Cian Lawton (1 f), John O’Sullivan 0-2 each, Liam Walsh, Alfie Hennessy, Max Murphy (f), Ciaran Kelly 0-1 each.

MIDLETON 1-16 GLEN ROVERS 4-12

Peter Barrett in action against the Glen on Wednesday night. Photo: Eddie O'Hare/Echo.

It was back to Mardyke on Wednesday night, and this time it was the minors but once again Glen Rovers provided the opposition.

We absolutely flew out of the traps in this game and points from Peter Barrett (4), Cian Stack (3), Josh Hogan and Nicky Coughlan saw us lead by 0-9 to 0-2 after 20 minutes.

The Glen replied with a free but then Cian Stack struck for the game's opening goal, which was added to by points from Sean McSharry and Peter Barrett to see us lead by ten points at half-time on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-4.

As you'd expect, Glen Rovers, remerged with a point to prove and this game turned on its head inside the opening nine minutes of the second-half. The Glen scored a point first before they hit four goals in three minutes (three of those within 90 seconds) and then a further point to see them go from ten down to two up with 18 to play.

Points from Peter Barrett, Conor Morley and Darragh Egan saw us trail by a single point (4-8 to 1-16) with six minutes to go but unfortunately that was as close as we got and the Glen rattled off the final four points of the tie to win by five.

We finished with 14 after the late sending off of Matthew McSweeney.

Hard luck lads.

Midleton sorers: P Barrett 0-8 (0-5 f), C Stack 1-3, N Coughlan, C Morley, J Hogan, S McSharry, D Egan 0-1 each.
