Walkathon Weekend a Winner

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the walkathon last weekend. To all the walkers who took time out to do laps at ungodly hours to those who helped keep the walkers refreshed throughout the day. From 7.30pm Friday to 7.30pm Saturday we had dozens of people brave the elements in order to raise money for the upkeep of this fabulous facility that so many in the community enjoy. There was a great evening afterwards in the Pedlar’s Rock where there were a few well deserved beverages consumed. The upkeep of the walkway will be safe for the coming 12 momths thanks to all of your efforts with close to €20,000 raised. This will help pay for the ESB bills, cutting of grass and all other maintenance costs associated with the walkway.

Juniors Win Against Killeagh

Our Junior hurlers gave a brilliant performance last Friday evening to defeat the reigning East Cork Junior B champions Killeagh in Rostellan. Playing under lights for the first time this year, Castlelyons took no time to get off the mark with Shane Flynn and Shane Cotter. Killeagh responded with 3 points before before Ciaran McGann scored a crucial goal. Castlelyons remained in the ascendancy for the rest of the half with fine points from Peter Roche (2) and Darran Tobin firing over the frees to leave us 1-09 to 0-07 up at half time. Castlelyons never took their foot off the pedal in the 2nd half and continued to press home their advantage. The newly wed Ronan Fenton scoring 3 points, just a day after returning home from his honeymoon to prove he had plenty left in the tank to give a stirring performance. Solid performances from Liam Moroney and Conor McCarthy in the centre of our defence. The impressive Matthew Rosner and Shane Flynn also putting in stirling performances. Jack Cremin and Brian O’Donovan both scored fine points to leave us 1-17 to 0-13 winners at the final whistle to place us into a East Cork Semi-final against Watergrasshill this Sunday at 11.30 in Carrignavar.

Team: G O’Neill, Oisin Morrison, L Moroney, M Rosner, S Flynn (0-01), C McCarthy, Colm O’Neill, P Roche (0-03), B O’Donovan (0-01), R Fenton (0-03), D Tobin (0-05, 0-04f), C Kouwenburg, S Cotter (0-01), C McGann (1-02), J Cremin (0-01).

County ¼ Final This Saturday

Our Senior hurlers make history as they take part in the club’s second county ¼ final at Senior level. Back in 2001 we played city-side Na Piarsaigh and Castlelyons triumphed after a replay on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-07. 23 years later we play the same opposition in the Senior A grade this Saturday evening at 7.15pm in Páirc Uí Rinn. Wins against Fermoy and Cloyne were juxtaposed to a disappointing defeat to Bride Rovers in our group games. The Northside club had narrow wins against Carrigtwohill and Courcey Rovers while they came up just short to one of the championship favourites Blarney in their final group game. They will provide stiff opposition, but Castlelyons have been training hard and we have experience now at knockout hurling which will stand to us. We look forward to seeing you all there Saturday evening.
