Action from East Cork playing fields

Round 3 groups 1 and 2 Michael O’Connor Motors Junior B Football Championship

St Catherines 4-15 Cobh 0-06

St Catherines were much the dominant force when this round 3 championship tie went ahead in pleasant conditions on an excellent Castlelyons surface on Thursday evening last. Throw-in being 7.30pm. Building up a tally mostly from placed balls through the opening quarter when midfielder Oisín Fitzgerald almost singlehandedly grasped the initiative. Setting up Kyle Wallace for the opening goal on 17 minutes before adding three points himself. Eoin Condon adding another 1-01 between then and the break with the Saints to the good on a 2-09 to 0-01 half time scoreline.

Fitzgerald and Wallace again added second half goals against a Cobh selection who had good players in Stephen Dennis, Adam O’Donovan and Paudie Kearney. Catherines using up their full quota of substitutes as the contest progressed with Conor Hayes pointing twice near the end like he did in the Minor match in Whitechurch 24 hours previously. Next and final game in the round robin section of the competition will be against Glenville next month.

Scorers: K Wallace (2-02), O Fitzgerald (1-03), E Condon (0-01 free) (1-02), E David (0-02 frees) (0-04), C Hayes (0-02), J Hayes and J Neville (0-01 each).

Round 2 division 2 Rebel Óg East Minor Football Championship

Whitechurch 2-13 St Catherines 1-08

It was the home team taking control early of this championship tie played at an overcast, even cold Whitechurch on Wednesday evening, August 14th last. Lee McCarthy and defender Ross Buckley on target with well worked scores. Likewise John Temple and Conor Hayes with the first of his duo of points. Making it 0-06 to 0-02 to 22 minutes. But you feel the goal finished off by Darragh O’Connell 6 minutes later inflicted the greatest damage. Whitechurch now ahead on an intimidating half time scoreline standing at 1-09 to 0-02 in their favour.

A recovery of sorts forthcoming through the third quarter. Diarmuid O’Connell with points from both frees and open play. Probably favoured by the conditions when judging beautifully a placed ball first time to the net by an alert Ciaran Pietropaolo, had it 2-10 to 1-05 to the end of the third quarter. A Jaimie Hegarty goal just previous minimising its effect. A game against Fermoy is still to be played. Concluding their hurling championship campaign against Blackrock at Ballynoe last evening (Wednesday), August 21st. Neither St Catherine’s team will now be advancing in their respective championships.

Scorers: D O’Connell (0-04 frees) (0-05), C Pietropaolo (1-00), C Hayes (0-02) and J Temple (0-01). Whitechurch scorers: J Hegarty and D O’Connell (0-01 free) (1-04 each), L McCarthy (0-02), R Buckley, C Harrington and C O’Brien (free) (0-01 each).

St Catherine’s team: T Dee, T Clancy, C Leamy, G O’Callaghan McCarthy (team captain), D O’Donovan, E O’Driscoll, T Barry, C Pietropaolo, C Hayes, L Moore, D O’Connell, C McCarthy, C Hickey, J Hickey, J Temple. Replacements: K O’Donoghue for L Moore (36’), A Cotter for J Hickey (44’), S Walsh for T Clancy (58’). Referee: Peter O’Donovan (Carrig na bhFear).

Phase 2 County U13 Football League

Kilshannig v St Catherines

Look, let’s be fair and short a few eligible players as Kilshannig compensated fully for the hurling loss at Ballynoe recently when winning out this football league tie played in Glantane early on Sunday morning.

Scorers: D Temple (1-02) and D Kenneally (1-00). St Catherine’s team: S Maguire, A Keane, S O’Keeffe, O Feeney, J Mulkerrins, G Leahy, A Coakley, N Kene, Z Pyne, O Sheehan, D Temple, J Bryan, B Coakley, P O’Sullivan, D Kenneally. Referee: Kevin O’Leary.

Round 2 division 2 Rebel Óg East U16 Football Championship

Ballycastle Gaels 3-15 St Catherines 2-12

A feature of this juvenile championship tie at an overcast Castletownroche on Monday evening, August 12th last was that all five goals scored duly arrived in the opening quarter. Making it 3-01 to 2-01 with the home based team ahead on a half time scoreline standing at 3-04 to 2-06. Favoured by the conditions and Ballycastle, a combination of Ballyhooly and Castletownroche were now having the better of it. Cathal McCarthy a constant threat. Likewise, Jaydn O’Connor for the Saints. Scorer of an impressive first goal in the opening exchanges. Then setting up Liam Moore for an equally well taken second minutes later. His free taking was unerring. Six points between the teams at game’s end.

Scorers: J O’Connor (0-07 frees) (1-08), L Moore (1-01), B Aherne (0-02) and T Walsh (0-01). Ballycastle Gaels scorers: C McCarthy (0-05 frees) (0-09), C Walshe (2-00), T Murphy (1-01), D Twomey (0-04) and F Walsh (0-01).

St Catherine’s team: S O’Donoghue, S McCarthy, J Kenneally, C Barry, S Walsh, K O’Donoghue, R Hickey, L Moore, B Aherne, C O’Driscoll, A Cotter, C Higgins, T Walsh, J O’Connor, L Kilmartin. Also: B O’Connor for C Higgins (second half). Referee: Peter Watson (Kildorrery).

U11 Hurling Tournament in Mullinahone

What a day for the Saints in getting to the final of the U11 Hurling Tournament, one of the finest and best organised of its kind in province or country as a whole and played in Mullinahone throughout last Saturday. Starting off with a win over Piltown, Kilkenny (5-06 to 2-04) before recording a sizeable success over Ahane of Limerick (8-11 to 1-00). Ahane later won out the plate or shield section. Then there was a win over Rathnure (Wexford) in the third match. That finished up on a scoreline of 3-08 to 1-01. Before overcoming Stradbally of Waterford (5-04 to 2-01) in the semi-final. Reversing a result from U10 days. Eoghan Rua Uí Neill of Dungannon (Tyrone) won out the tournament. Defeating the Saints in the final on an end scoreline of 5-02 to 3-04. Generally accepted to be one of the best finals in the tournament history. Each match goes with ten minutes-a-side. But it’s 15 minutes-a-side for the final. It was an 11 players-a-side tournament. St Catherines bringing a panel of 14 with them. All players sampling action.

Lineout: Cian Fitzgerald, Joe Leahy, John Beecher, Cathal Kearney, Adam Fitzgerald, Ronan Geaney, Sean O’Keeffe, Alex Keane, Ciaran O’Connor, Robbie Pietropaolo, Cathal Twomey. Also Luke Kearney, Donnchadh Linehan and Sean Flynn.

Congratulations to Laura and Niamh as Cork register hard earned camogie double

Maybe neither team played to their full potential. But all that matters now is that Cork are Glen Dimplex All-Ireland Senior and Intermediate camogie champions. Down a point at the interval (1-01 to 0-09), a rousing third quarter during which Katrina Mackey finished off the game’s only goal on 36 minutes and effective use of the bench were the hallmarks laying the foundation for a hard earned Rebelette success in front of 28,000 attendance.

What a day for Laura Hayes and Niamh O’Regan, respective members of both successful Cork teams. Niamh right corner forward in the earlier intermediate decider, scorer of the two first half points at the end of the opening quarter, important scores as Cork emerged victors by the slimmest of margins over a game and gallant Kilkenny outfit. What is it about Cork, Kilkenny and one point games? Spare a thought for Galway. Third weekend in a row playing in an All-Ireland Final. Third successive defeat. They sure don’t come easy.

Completing a Munster clean sweep of successes with Tipperary too winners by the slimmest of margins over Laois in the first Junior decider. Opening fixture on a triple header of camogie finals at headquarters on Sunday afternoon. So now the Jack McGrath and O’Duffy Cups will winter in rebel-land. Presumably spending at least a night in St Catherine’s parish. Laura Hayes and Niamh O’Regan are terrific ambassadors for their families, club and county. You feel more success will come down the track.

Round 1 group 2 East Cork Oil East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship

Castlelyons 2-27 St Catherines 1-08

As the scoreboard reveals Castlelyons just had too much in this one-sided, disappointing championship tie played at an overcast Watergrasshill on Friday evening. Darren Tobin was in prolific scoring form and receiving able back-up from Jack Cremin, Ronan Fenton and Ciaran McGann had built up an intimidating 12 point advantage on a half time scoreline standing at 015 to 0-03. An early Rob Feeney goal just into the turnover another killer blow against a Saints’ outfit who battled commendably through the third quarter and beyond. Ciaran Pietropaolo and Evan O’Driscoll finding the range. Brian Davis, reliable and accurate from placed balls. At the end of a four man move Aaron Neville with a clinical finish expertly finding the opposition net on 51 minutes. Shane Cotter first touched the second Castlelyons goal late on. Other teams in this group are Erins Own and Carrigtwohill.

Scorers: B Davis (0-04 frees) (0-01 “65”) (0-06), A Neville (1-00), E O’Driscoll and C Pietropaolo (0-01 each). Castlelyons scorers: D Tobin (0-03 “65”) (0-02 frees) (0-10), R Feeney and S Cotter (1-03 each), J Cremin, R Fenton, C McGann and P Roche (0-02 each), C Kouwenberg, J Kenny and C McCarthy (free) (0-01 each).

Round 1 group 3 East Cork Junior C Hurling Championship

Midleton 0-27 St Catherines 1-05

The Magpies were much too strong in this championship tie played in sunny conditions at Clonmult Park, Midleton, on Saturday evening last at 4.30pm.

Scorers: S Kearney (1-00), K Dinneen (0-01 free) (0-02), P O’Neill and J Hurley (free) (0-01 each).

Round 2 Division 1 Rebel Óg East Minor Hurling Championship

St Catherines 1-14 Kiltha Óg 3-16

Very much a competitive encounter to the three-quarter mark and beyond. Before Kiltha Óg eventually saw off a commendable Saints challenge from this encounter played in overcast conditions at Ballynoe on Wednesday evening, August 7th last.

Both sides starting sprightly. Brian Flynn and Evan O’Driscoll were the goalscorers in the opening exchanges. Keepers Mark Cody and Jake Bryan, though conceding early, subsequently produced eye-catching, rewarding stops, nothing wrong with their reflexes, with Ciaran Pietropaolo and Evan Connolly the most prominent of the respective forward lines. Two thus far evenly and well-matched teams upsides of each other on 6 occasions. Still level on a half time scoreline now standing at 1-06 apiece.

Kiltha were noticeably rattled. Losing a player to a straight red on 40 minutes. Diarmuid O’Connell and Gearoid Sheehan off placed balls, strengthening the home position in the interim. Now edging ahead on a 1-12 to 1-08 scoreline in the early stages of the fourth and final quarter. That said, the opposition were regaining control around the middle and after a Ewan Cashman goal, the whole issue turned. Though they were together again at 1-13 to 2-10 to 52 minutes, the balance of power had changed. Outscoring the Saints 1-06 to 0-01 from there on, with late cards having no impact on the end result. St Catherines must still play Blackrock. Though effectively both are now out of the equation. A round 2 division 2 football championship encounter was scheduled for Whitechurch last evening, Wednesday, August 14th.

Scorers: G Sheehan (0-06 frees), E O’Driscoll (1-02), C Pietropaolo and D O’Connell (0-02 frees) (0-03 each). Kiltha Óg scorers: F Daly (0-05 frees) (0-01 “65”) (0-08), E Connolly (1-03), B Flynn (1-01), E Cashman (1-00), C Howard (0-02), C O’Callaghan and C Ryan (0-01 each).

St Catherines’ team: J Bryan, G O’Callaghan McCarthy, C McCarthy, T Barry, C Hayes, D O’Donovan, T Clancy, E O’Driscoll, D O’Connell, C Hickey, C Leamy (team captain), J Temple, K O’Donoghue, C Pietropaolo, G Sheehan. Sub used: A Cotter for G Sheehan (51’). Also: C Murray, T Dee, L Moore and D Murphy. Referee: Eoin Coleman (Youghal).

Round 1 division 1 Rebel Óg East U16 Hurling Championship

Aghada v St Catherines

Aghada were lords and masters, dominating from the outset of this opening championship tie played in Rostellan on bank holiday Monday evening, August 5th last. Hopefully Billy Aherne’s injury isn’t too serious.

Scorers: A Cotter (0-07 frees) (0-11), T Morrison (1-00), L Moore, C O’Driscoll and S Walsh (free) (0-01 each).

St Catherine’s team: S O’Keeffe, S McCarthy, E O’Mahony, C Barry, C O’Driscoll, T Clancy, S Walsh, L Moore, K O’Donoghue, B Aherne, A Cotter, S O’Donoghue, T Walsh, R Hickey, C Higgins. Subs: B O’Connor for B Aherne (24’), L Kilmartin for T Walsh (39’), T Morrison for C Higgins (46’), K O’Connell for S McCarthy (50’). Referee: Pa Beausang (Midleton).

Round 4 division 2 Rebel Óg East U14 Hurling League

Fermoy 1-09 St Catherines 2-15

A remarkably similar outcome to the championship equivalent when this juvenile league tie went ahead in overcast conditions at Fermoy on Tuesday evening, August 6th last. Early scores from Cathal Higgins, Ben O’Connor and David Temple among others, helping the visitors to settle. Catapulting them into an interval advantage standing on a 1-09 to 0-04 half time scoreline.

Fermoy went about clawing back the deficit on the turnover. Boosted by the accuracy of Darragh Wall from placed balls. Again you feel a stupendous strike from Tadg Walsh on 49 minutes for his second goal and an exhibition of Kenneth O’Connell point scoring to be the defining scores.

Scorers: T Walsh (0-04 frees) (2-04), K O’Connell (0-07), C Higgins (0-02), B O’Connor and D Temple (0-01 each). Fermoy scorers: D Wall (0-05 frees), M Hennessy (1-00), J Cahill (0-02), O O’Mahony and D Morrison (0-01 each).

St Catherine’s team: S O’Keeffe, S McCarthy, S Riordan, J Coughlan, S Moore, B O’Connor, N Keane, K O’Connell, C Higgins, D Temple, J Cunneen, E Dillon, T Walsh, T Morrison, R O’Donoghue.

Subs: C Fitzgerald for E Dillon (26’), A O’Gorman for S McCarthy (34’), A Keane for C Fitzgerald (47’), S McCarthy for D Temple (56’). Referee: John O’Brien (Ballygiblin).

Round 5 division 2 Rebel Óg East U14 Hurling League

St Catherines 1-09 Ballygiblin 3-12

But had to prop up a few lines from the younger age group for this league tie in Ballynoe on Friday evening last.

Scorers: T Walsh (0-02 frees) (1-03), K O’Connell (0-02), S Riordan, D Temple, E Dillon and C Higgins (“65”) (0-01 each).

St Catherine’s team: S O’Keeffe, C McCarthy, S Moore, A Keane, A O’Gorman, S Riordan, N Keane, K O’Connell, C Higgins, E Dillon, J Cunneen, D Temple, T Walsh, T Morrison, R O’Donoghue. Also: O Sheehan for S Moore. Referee: Peter O’Donovan (Carrig na bhFear).

Phase 2 U12 Hurling League

St Catherines 4-08 St Colmcilles 2-07

Hugely entertaining U12 match in the pitch on Saturday morning. Adam Coakley, Adam Fitzgerald, Ronan Geaney and James Beecher to the fore for the home team. As were Harry Varley, Ayo Osunboyede and in particular Ross O’Donovan for the visiting club. In the balance until man of the match Alex Keane pounced for the match winning goal, late on.

Scorers: A Keane (2-05), O Sheehan (1-00 “65”) (0-01 “65”) (1-01), R Pietropaolo (1-00), J Beecher and R Geaney (0-01). St Colmcille’s scorers: R O’Donovan (1-00 free) (0-01 “65”) (1-05), A Osunboyede (1-00), H Varley and C Ramsall (0-01 each).

St Catherine’s team: C Fitzgerald, J Leahy, A Coakley, O Feeney, C Kearney, O Sheehan, A Fitzgerald, A Keane, R Geaney, D Rahal, J Beecher, C O’Connor, R Pietropaolo, D Kenneally, O O’Farrell. Also: C Twomey for D Rahal (17’). Referee: Anthony O’Regan (Youghal).

Phase 2 Coiste na nÓg County U13 Football League

St Catherines v Dromtarriffe

Look, Dromtarriffe were successful in this football league tie played at a dull, overcast, occasionally wet Ballynoe on Thursday evening last. They had the better players, midfielder Fionn O’Mahony almost unmarkable, and were fully deserving winners. But the Saints put in a savage second half shift. Tremendous work rate put in by Aaron O’Gorman, Noah Keane, Gary Leahy, Zak Pyne, Sean O’Keeffe and the peerless Kenneth O’Connell. No shame when you lose to a better outfit.

St Catherines’ team” S Maguire, A Coakley, S Moore, A O’Connor, J Mulkerrins, K O’Connell (0-03 frees) (3-04), A O’Gorman, N Keane, G Leahy, D Temple, Z Pyne, T Shiels, B Coakley, S O’Keeffe (0-01), P O’Sullivan. Also: O Feeney, D Kenneally and O Sheehan. Referee: Sean Spillane (Killeagh).
